    RO System or Brew Lab?

Relative to what? My unit is pretty darn efficient. I believe the membrane I bought has around 96% rejection IIRC and makes 80gpd. Drops my TDS down to around 8ppm. Not much practical room for improvement there.

    Grainfather!!

That's what I did. I entered their formula from the user manual into a spreadsheet. It's simply a matter of inputting the total weight of your grain bill, and it outputs your mash and sparge water volumes.

Logistics of Home Lager Brewing - Discussion

Great minds think alike, I guess :) I make a starter for the first batch, and for subsequent batches I transfer the wort right into the previously-drained fermentor. I should probably clean it between batches this next time :)

Logistics of Home Lager Brewing - Discussion

I now do almost exclusively German lagers and agree with LLBeanJ--the logistics aren't something to get hung up on. For me the key was having both enough kegs (9) and an extra lagering freezer. The first thing I did was fill up all my kegs except for one with ales (8 kegs) to last me until my...

Grainfather recipe? - beersmith or grainfather brewing calculator?

I use Beersmith to formulate my recipe, but I use the formula in the user manual to calculate water volumes. Using the Grainfather equipment profile with efficiency set at 80%works fine for recipe formulation.

Gonna have a baby, is my life over

You've got seven months for "the old you" to finish living. After that, "the new you" will be born at the same time as your baby. A year from now, you'll hardly remember what life was like as "the old you." You'll barely have the time to remember. My life was completely disrupted for about 10...

    Homemade Bread Thread

Those rolls remind me a lot of the Brötchen I used to eat in Germany! Looks good!

    Grainfather!!

Revamped HLT: already using an old 10 gal Polarware pot from my other brewery. Added a temp controller and wrapped it in reflectix. Fashioned a waterproof thermowell out of extra icemaker line for the probe. (Not really necessary, just having fun.) Doing a test right now.

    Experiences with jury duty

Coincidentally I got my summons and preselection questionnaire in the mail yesterday. Looks to be some kind of medical malpractice suit based on the questions. 46 and this will be my first time, if I get selected.

    Growler Tap / Dispencer

Might check William's Brewing. I believe I've seen something in their catalog.

    Basic Lagering Question

Woah! That's why you're asking? :) I'm not sure whether the continuing flavor development would occur if all the yeast is filtered out. Hopefully someone else will chime in here.

What are you doing instead of brewing this weekend?

Feel your pain, bruh. Got one turning 10 today, and after having a couple screaming, giggly ones spend the night last night, we're having the party for a whole mess more of them in the backyard today, I plan on some solitude in the man cave this evening.

    Water question

Yes, please take the morebeer article with a grain of salt. I did pull the quoted ranges from that page but don't actually use then myself. I use brunwater, and recommend it over the information on the morebeer page. I was too lazy to get off the couch, walk into my office, and consult the...

    Water question

That would depend on what your target water profile is. You don't technically have to change what you have, as your levels are perfectly acceptable as they are (i.e. not excessive). It is only if you are trying to match a specific water profile of another place that you would add a source of...

    Grainfather!!

    Congrats! Enjoy!

    Water question

The numbers you DO have are not terrible--I've seen worse--but you still need more info. I'd either get a test or build it from RO.

    Water treatment.....or not

+1. My tap water is actually pretty good for drinking--only moderately hard and not excessive with regard to minerals and chlorine. Makes good beer, too. However, the beer is even better starting with RO and adding CaCl, lactic acid or sauermalz depending on grain bill, and possibly gypsum...

    Grainfather!!

Never even come close to having one. It seems as if enough head-space was designed into the thing that it's a non-issue. (Ymmv ) A spray bottle of water nearby however would probably be enough to take care of it.

    Grainfather!!

Great idea! I'm thinking this might be the way to go for me in the future so that I can scrape the trub off the filter periodically. I agree that it's a great time for cleaning during the transfer, but I'm not built for multitasking. I want the wort in the fermentor ASAP so I can devote my...
