    Water volume for partial mash

The recipe is the "Speckled Heifer" partial mash kit from NB. I guess when in doubt I'll just follow the instructions. Correction: recipe calls for 5 quarts strike water and 5 quarts sparge water.

    Water volume for partial mash

I'm going to attempt a partial mash recipe. I'm planning on using my boil kettle with a grain bag. The recipe calls out something like 3 gallons of water for the mash and then topping off the water after sparging to get a set pre-boil volume. Since my kettle is big enough, couldn't I just...

    "wet dog" taste in beer???

I got a batch right now that has a slight wet dog taste, but seems only present if beer is ice cold. Once warmed up a bit I cant detect it. I highly suspect this batch got oxidized due to bottling issue. Tubing looked to be sucking air from somewhere for some reason. So maybe thats a clue.

    I don't keep a log

Since I've only been brewing kits, I just record basic info. - kit name, batch #, days in primary, and anything else I think I might want to know that I think might have an effect of the end product. Mostly it's reference because I write the batch# on the bottle caps. In case I find a dusty...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Will be bottling up my cream ale and promptly refilling my fermenter with a porter. I look forward to brew days like kids at Christmas.

    Considering opening a homebrew store

My LHBS is for sale. They are selling everything as a turn-key operation. That would be the ticket if one was so inclined. I can only imagine it's not very profitable due to online competition and # of actual homebrewers. They are also a regular liquor store so I'm sure that helps pay for...

    Purge sediment/yeast cake or no?

My beer's been in a conical fermenter for a week now. Plan is to let it go 2 weeks before bottling. I forgot to take an original gravity reading so I was planning to start checking a few days prior to the 2 week mark. Since I have a conical it is real easy to open up a ball valve and...

    Best way to cool wort?

So is there any issue with cooling too fast? On my first and only batch I boiled some RO the night before and stuck the whole pot in the freezer. Since I need top-off water anyway I then threw that block of ice in the wort. That took the temp down real fast.

    Fermenter vs bottle

Currently have a batch of Autumn Amber Ale in fermenter that I want try drinking in 5 weeks. What’s generally more beneficial to the average ale: more time in bottle or more time in fermenter? Planning on doing a minimum of 2 weeks in fermenter and would like at least 2 weeks in the...
