    May 2, 2015 - National Homebrew Day

I'll be running a Marathon that day.

Is kegging always a battle against leaks?

Just got into kegging and had to get my CO2 tank refilled after only one week. Double checked all my orings, connections before putting on the fresh tank. Appears to be no leaks when checking with soapy water, but I'm paranoid now so I've been keeping the gas off. I've been giving it shot...

    Never dump it

I had a batch I really didn't care for. I honestly don't think it improved with age, I just became more accepting of it. When out of other brews I'd crack one of these open, take a sip and say, "I guess it's not that bad". Then proceed to drink two or three. Took awhile but I eventually...

    Corn Sugar vs Table Sugar

Using table sugar do you guys boil a priming mixture first? I've tried it once the same way I process a corn sugar priming solution. The table sugar turned into a thick syrup so I cut the boil short. The beer didnt carb well at all and had a burnt sugary taste. Went back to corn sugar and...

Just bought 6pk of miller lite...

I lived in India for a time and when I got back home I couldn't stand the 'bland' food. Had to dump a bottle of tabasco sauce on mac n' cheese in order to taste anything. Think the same thing happens with beer. You get used to drink more flavorful beer and before you know it anything else...

    Outsourcing kettle drilling

I'm in the middle of my electric brewery build and messing with the stainless steel kettles makes me wish I just ponied up the cash and bought from Spikes. Think I was quoted about $840 from Spikes for my needed kettles. So I bought some Concords from Amazon for about $280 Painstakingly...

What is your most useless piece of brewing equipment?

My large strainer. All it does is clog up and makes messes. I since just dump everything in the fermenter. It settles out by the time I rack and I've been satisfied with the way the beer turns out. Also, (I'm sure to catch some flak here) but honestly my hydrometers. I haven't used one in a...

What's your ideal drinking situation and what kind of beer?

After a long distance run. Sometimes its my motivation when out for a run. For example today I'm doing 10-miles, that'll burn about 1800 calories (a 12-pack). Take a hot shower, disappear into the basement when the family goes to bed, pop in a good movie, and drink some beer. Thats as good...

    Are you a swirler?

I'm a swirler...just to rouse up some CO2 and put a head back on the beer. Hate drinking a headless beer.

    2014 Brewyears Resolutions

Going to brew one more extract brew on new years day (vanilla porter). Then, no more brewing until my semi-automated ebrew stand is fully operational. Then it's all-grain going forward.

Funny things you've overheard about beer

College classmate had the surname "Drinkwine". I never asked him, but always wondered the origin of that name.

    How to achieve patience...

No matter what I still always find myself cracking a bottle of a new brew after a week...just to try it. My pipeline is full enough at the moment where I'm taking a little break from brewing. I can't (shouldn't) be drinking that much beer.

    Noob Question

In a brain dead moment I checked my cooling wort's temperature with an unsanitized meat thermometer I use for grilling. This was an electronic one that just gets 'wiped off' after sticking it in a piece of meat. Somehow the beer turned out fine.

How many beers do you drink a night?

Being formerly gravitationally challenged (lost over 75lbs) I continue to watch my calorie intake. I try to partake only on days I workout (currently training for a marathon). Figure a beer is roughly 150 calories, a bomber at 300. My normal 3-mile run burns about 500 calories, 6-miles burns...

    Bottling Day!!!!!

I'm a little OCD when it comes to cleaning bottles. Even if they 'should' be clean, I wash them with PBW/bottle brush the night before and put them on bottling tree. While my priming sugar is boiling/cooling, I star-san each bottle with a sulfiter. I dip the mouth of the bottles in the foamy...

What do you do with your spent grains?

I've been putting them either in trash or garden. I'm going to try the bread thing from now on. Maybe every batch of beer I'll do will have a matching loaf of bread to go with it.

Injecting cooled wort back into hot bk.

Why not "splash the wort back in"? Wouldn't that be an effective way to chill and aerate at the same time?

15 gallon MT too big for 5 gallon batch?

I'm in the same boat as OP here. I'm currently building a semi-automated ebrew stand and bought a 7.5 gal for HLT, 15 gal mash, and 10 gal boil kettle. Now I'm second guessing the mash tun. Figure 12 lbs of grain at 1.25 qt/lbs comes to 3.75 gallons. Not sure the volume of the grains, but...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Was hoping to brew a vanilla porter from AIH this weekend. Ordered on Tuesday hoping for a Friday delivery but have yet to see a shipping confirmation. I should easily be within 2-day shipping so I wouldn't think it would take them more than 2 days to process an order. Maybe there's still...

    What happened?

I got a batch right now doing something like that. In my case I suspect incomplete mixing of the priming sugar with the beer in my bottling bucket. Some of the beers bottled out of the same bucket are flat, others are gushers. I used to rely on the swirling action when racking to mix in...
