Bought a chest freezer today, time to build keezer

I'll add one thing about filling bottles off my keezer. I bought a couple of bottle fillers, gave up on them as too cumbersome to use. Know what I do to fill bottles now? I have Perlick flow-control faucets. I use a growler filler on those faucets to fill bottles; I make sure foam exits the...

Bought a chest freezer today, time to build keezer

That's exactly what you should do.

    Glass rinser

I got mine from the Chi company: https://www.chicompany.net/flare-fittings-c-375_19_220_285/bulkhead-adapter-shank-long-p-2263.html

    Glass rinser

Here's a pic of the underside. I have Command Hooks holding the stained facing/facia on it, so that I can easily remove them if need be. The right side of the rinser is held to the black right-angle brackets using command hooks too--you can't drill through the pan, nor should you. I also...

Using Bernzomatic Oxygen Cylinders for Oxygenating Wort

I've done a lot of stuff with oxygen, and with yeast, and I kind of doubt that oxygen had anything to do with the differences. It may have had more to do with one fermenter's dry yeast being mixed in faster, or something else different between the two. You don't have to oxygenate with dry...

Using Bernzomatic Oxygen Cylinders for Oxygenating Wort

Do you want to be in the experimental or control group? :)

Using Bernzomatic Oxygen Cylinders for Oxygenating Wort

I generally get about 10 uses out of them, BUT I'm controlling them using the device below (available on Amazon for about 10 bucks). And since an aquarium pump cannot do as well as pure O2, that's a nonstarter for me. YMMV.

2 Vessel Rims - All grain sizing

I never thought about using the RIMS to help heat the strike water or the wort. That's brilliant! I love that setup--how many tries did it take you to get it right? Took me a year.... ;) As far as underletting and avoiding a stuck mash....when I transfer from BK to the MT, I'm doing it at...

Why Do Beer Kits only Include One Yeast Package

That was actually one of my concerns initially doing this method. The results suggest it's not a problem, but more than that, whatever flavor degradation might occur in the starter due to oxidation is, IMO, overwhelmed by the flavors in the other 6 gallons in the wort. I've never enjoyed the...

Why Do Beer Kits only Include One Yeast Package

I agree at one level....but at another level not. If you were Chris White, would you want to tell people they could pitch a packet of White Labs yeast without using a starter if it wasn't going to work? What would that do to the reputation of your product?

Why Do Beer Kits only Include One Yeast Package

Well, "correct" depends on who you ask. Chris White would disagree with you on the need for a starter with liquid yeast in most conventional circumstances, and I've done brews using liquid yeast and no starter, and they weren't any different for me. Some questions have multiple "correct" answers.

Why Do Beer Kits only Include One Yeast Package

I have, over time, come to the tentative conclusion that the amounts of yeast in standard packages are just fine for most beers, exception being big beers (higher than, say, 7.0 ABV). I attended a yeast workshop put on by Chris White of White Labs (yeah, the head guy!). I asked about starters...

Do higher mashing temps override lower mashing temps?

I've always argued that the experiments themselves are pretty well done, in my opinion. The problem has never been the willingness to do the experiments, nor their quality; the problem has always been the resulting tests. And I do, to some extent, believe this, attributed to Teddy...

Do higher mashing temps override lower mashing temps?

I have a theory about brewing good beer that relies on the idea that a lot of best practices produce differences that are not perceptible to the average person. But, taken together, the cumulative effect is perceptible. (This is theoretical). Imagine (imagine!) a metric where 1.0 is the...

Do higher mashing temps override lower mashing temps?

Believe me, I understand what a p-value indicates. I taught statistics for 35 years, both graduate and undergraduate levels. You say that " the fact that there's 13 correct instead of 9 is important." Well, maybe. What if only 4 people could really tell the difference, the other 9 simply...

Do higher mashing temps override lower mashing temps?

I have a graduate minor in statistics, so none of this is foreign to me. The concern I have is that there is valuable information in the fact that MOST can't tell a difference, and there's no concern whatsoever about power. Further, to include those who guess right--who by their own admission...
