Pale Ale Malt Bill, Saison Yeast?

Hey guys! I plan on making a "Frankenstein" beer sometime in the near future, and was wondering with the summer months coming, if it would be a good idea to make a Pale Ale/IPA grain bill and add Belgium Saison yeast? Here are ingredients that I have for a 5 gallon batch: -6oz Crystal 120...

    Wyeast smack pack yeast starter

Gotcha. According to Mr. Malty, I need to make a 3.33 liter starter in order to get the appropriate cell count with the 1.073 OG. I could also opt to use 2 smack packs and make a 1.34 liter starter. That makes sense, right?

    Wyeast smack pack yeast starter

Hey all, I'm planning on making a brew with a 1.073 OG and decided to make a yeast starter as I've never done this before and have heard that this is a great way to get your cell count up. I looked up how much yeast I need with the Mr. Malty's calculator. I'll be using Wyeast American Ale...

Gravity too low, can someone tell me what I did wrong?

That seems to make a lot of sense. Now thinking back, I didn't go to town when I mixed in the top off water. Thanks guys!!!

Gravity too low, can someone tell me what I did wrong?

Hey everyone. I brewed my second batch of beer this past weekend, and I think my gravity is too low. I've put my recipe below. I mashed the 5 lbs. of grain in 7.5 quarts of water at 153 degrees for 60 minutes. I sparged with 170 degree water to get 4 gallons of wort. I brought the wort up to...

Spices for an American Brown Ale

Hey Jud, Thanks for the info and the recipe. For calculation and measurements I usually use Hopville.com (just cause it's free), but maybe BeerSmith might be a better option as Hopville does not account for anything outside of direct fermentables and hop additions. Thanks again for all of your...

Spices for an American Brown Ale

Thanks Jud! Any advice on quantities, or is this just something you kinda have to feel out? (Hence the one gallon batch idea).

Spices for an American Brown Ale

Nice! That sounds very tasty. I might add some myself. I also heard that ground spices can be very dominating in a recipe. I planned on using whole spices, but breaking them up a little before I add them to the boil. Do you think that would be okay? Thanks for the feedback!!!

Spices for an American Brown Ale

This is an American Brown Ale recipe that I've come up with, but I would like to add cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon at the end of the boil. I was wondering if this is a good idea, and quantities would be great also! Appreciate any and all feedback. This will be a 4 gallon boil, final batch size...
