    Adding extract

Can anyone shed some light on the differences between adding prior to boil vs mid-boil or flameout? I understand it can change color but I'm wondering if there are any effects on body or flavor.

Enjoying the fruits of my labor

I brewed up my first, a brown ale, on February 27th. Been in the bottles for about 3.5 weeks now and I have to say it is damn enjoyable. Mild with some good body to it. There's just something so satisfying about pouring myself a cold glass of my own creation. I have a feeling anyone else would...

First brew in the bucket! Lessons learned and Questions

No worries man, 20 minutes is not bad for a cooling time. My first batch with no IC took like 45 minutes and about 4 ice baths.

Blow-off tube came out of the bucket. Now what?

Even if the krausen had fallen, there would still have been a layer a CO2 gas in the carboy keeping it more or less "sealed" since it is heavier than oxygen. Unless someone was tossing debris into the opening, I don't think you have anything to worry about. So... RDWHAHB

Blow-off tube came out of the bucket. Now what?

I'm not sure I would be real worried. Was there a layer of krausen?

Does This Look Okay To You?

I'm wondering how it got all over the sides like that.

    Hurling from Homebrew!

So then I guess the title of this thread is misleading. Looks like instead of hurling from homebrew it was hurling from... idiocy?

    First Bottling Experience

Lotta work! Fun to get it done though. Ended up with 46 bottles of brown ale total. Still had some at the bottom of the carboy when I racked to the bottling bucket but i didn't want it to be too mixed up with the trub. Don't know how long it took but once I was done I cleaned and sanitized...

just patting myself on the back

Congrats man! My first is a brown ale that I brewed last month. Looking to bottle it on Thursday. Can't wait to crack open that first bottle.

    First batch is bottled!!

Good point man! I've thought about it. I inspired my brother to get started with his first home brew as well. He's going right into it with kegging though since he was given all the hoses and equipment by a buddy of his who just deployed to afghanistan. My birthday is coming up so maybe I'll...

    My first brew!

Seems the most active part of the fermentation has slowed down now. Room temp hasn't really changed from 70+/- degrees. I can't see any yeast swirling anymore and the airlock has slowed down to about 35ish seconds between bubbles. I know the yeast is still in there doing the job but it was...

    First batch is bottled!!

Wow man talk about jumping into it head first. RIS by the looks of it seems a pretty legit brew process. I have my first batch in the primary still (since Wednesday night) and I just went with a simple nut brown ale. I wanted to get a feel for capping just for fun so I capped a few of my...

    My first brew!

Day 3 in the primary. After shutting off my alarm clock this morning the first thing I heard in the silence of the house was my airlock. :D I can see the yeast swirling around through the sides of my opaque bucket primary (sure makes me want to get a larger glass carboy as a second primary.) I...

    My first brew!

That is so funny man because not only did I post pictures of the wort creation on Facebook, but I even posted a video today of the airlock bubbling. I was giddy to see that I had successfully gotten the fermenting started. It's pretty active right now. We've got it on the other side of the...

    My first brew!

It's a brown ale. Got the recipe as a good first brew from Corvallis Brewing supply (www.brewbeer.cc). Boiled the wort and got it into the primary last night by about 10 o clock. Just as I expected it took me about 3 1/2 hours (working by myself). Everything went really smooth aside from the...
