Buying brewing equipment at a non-HB store....

About getting used buckets--I would think that a frosting bucket from a bakery would work, but don't bother messing with most other buckets that food was packed in. I know that the big buckets restaurants get pickles delivered in will NEVER loose their pickle aroma, no matter what you do...

how to clean a blow off tube?

You could use pipe cleaners to scrub it. If you go to a hardware store they should have ones in various sizes, rather than the colored ones used by primary school children.

    Used kegshell

Thanks for the link, exactly the type of thing I'm looking for.

    Used kegshell

No, no, it is a keg. I'm just used to liquor stores calling what you put the deposit on a 'shell.' As for requirements, I don't have any. The keg is just sitting around not being used for anything, so I'm just looking for inspiration--it's time for a new project, I think.

    Used kegshell

Hey guys, So, I have an empty 15.5 gallon kegshell sitting around my house, and I was wondering what the best thing to do with it is. I see pictures of various uses for them, but could anyone point me to a thread with some uses/instructions? Thanks in advance, TCB

    From Aurora, CO

Welcome! I'm up in Boulder. How's that Brew Hut place? Still looking for a good replacement for our HB store that closed.

    SWMBO be PISSED

Unless you're allergic to citrus...in which case, when life serves you lemons, swell up and die. I had a boil-over bad enough (extract brewing) that I had to remove the entire top of my range--burners, metal and all--and clean off the goo with a putty knife. That was fun.

    Fermented food.

I can't think fermented food without thinking Hákarl. I've never had the misfortune to try it, but my father assures me it's quite terrible. Also, I seem to be allergic to kimchi...I love the taste, but when I eat it, I have a reaction around my lips and mouth that feels like a really, really...

    Brewing in Boulder, CO

Well, hopefully I'll get up north and check that place out. I haven't really heard good things about the Westminster place. I always found What's Brewin' to be hit or miss. The prices were great, but I agree that the folks who worked there could occasionally be jackasses. It was much more...

Where did you get your stuff at? Let me know if you need a (slightly) experienced hand to help out with a brew, I'm generally up to brew and drink some beer:mug:

What does the 'L' stand for?

Huh. Makes sense. I was sorta surprised not to see it in the Wiki section on the different caramel levels. It does seem like a fairly inexact measurement scale...less specific than a measurement like using the alpha acid % to calculate bitterness (HBU I believe?). I can't really think of a...

What does the 'L' stand for?

Sorry if this has already been covered...didn't really know what to search for. When you buy grains to make your grain tea, you can get 60 L or 120 L, etc crystal malt...what unit is the L? I've brewed a fair amount, but just realized I didn't know what that actually signifies.

    Brewing in Boulder, CO

I haven't decided...mostly I just sit at home and lament the loss of that wonderful store. I ordered a bit of yeast from ebrew.com for a cider, but I haven't bought any large-volume ingredients. Any suggestions? I heard there was a place in Ft. Collins.

Alright, really, no rinsing of Star San foam?

I don't worry too much about the foam. If you're careful with how you pour your water out, though, and keep the flow out of the fermenter more or less laminar, you don't end up with too much foam. Same thing works when you're sanitizing your bottles, incidentally.

;) Every time I grab a beer... I almost made my name "InTheClosetBrewery," but didn't for some reason. Gay jokes are a cornerstone of my brewing operation.
