How did you estimate your boil off rate? 90 min is a long boil for an ale.
My measured boil-off on a 9 gallon kettle is more like 1-1.2 gal/hr not 2.1
Just something I noticed when looking at your recipe, since if you calculated that incorrectly then BeerSmith would calculate your pre-boil...
Agree with Stillraining, the most important thing is your sanitation and a reasonable fermentation temperature range. 60-62F seems a appropriate for an ale yeast (if not every so slightly low so fermentation might take a little longer). If you're getting 4 degree temperature variations in the...
Also if beersmith told you 7 gallons for mash and sparge water but had a different pre-boil volume it's possible that you were supposed to leave some sparge water behind.
What was the OG supposed to be?
Did you temperature correct the pre-boil gravity reading?
The gravity will increase with the boil as you boil off fluid, did you setup your equipment profile and set your batch size correctly in beersmith? Did beersmith estimate a 6 gallon pre-boil volume...
This.
If I'm reading your post correctly, it sounds like you didn't have a boil over as much as adding O2 caused the wort to bubble out of the fermenter? If that's the case then it is normal that it would not affect the original gravity, you just have less volume of the same gravity solution...
Here's a great article on keg balancing that I used on my own system: http://beersmith.com/blog/2011/07/14/keg-line-length-balancing-the-science-of-draft-beer/
In short: Ideal Length of hose = (Serving PSI - 1 - (Height of tap above Keg/2))/Resistance of tubing
3/16" Vinyl tubing...
Yes, there's the grain loss plus depending on your equipment setup you may have loss at the bottom of your lauter tun. Additionally, you don't always want to collect every last bit of sparge water since as the sparge progresses the pH of the water rises which will extract more tannins and...
I've used this site so much since I started brewing. Finally making an account since I'm planning on brewing a LOT more this year and I feel like I finally know enough about this stuff to be of use to some people hopefully.
My goal this year is to brew every other week (way more than I've...
