Just be sure to secure your Co2 cylinder so the valve is protected. Inside or out of the kegerator wont matter you just dont want to make a missle out if it by snapping the valve off.
the only down side to kegging half a batch in a full size keg is you use mor Co2 that usual. First to purg ethen to fill the big head space and keep pressure to carbonate. But hey Co2 is cheap so why not.

Thank you for your quick reply. I did not prime the keg with sugar. I plan to force carbonate (either shake method or letting sit wit Co2 pressure). Can I carbonate it now (at 36'F) and let it condition? In the future should I rack to a secondary then to the keg? Would that be required?
