    Advice on vacuum bag size

I'm planning to get a vacuum sealer for my the dried whole hops I'm hoping to have soon. This one: http://www.sorbentsystems.com/sinbosealer.html What mylar bag size and thickness do you recommend? I figure I want 2oz packages, and I've seen quart and gallon bags, from 3 to 7 mil.

    Hydrometers stink!

Mine reads 1.006 in distilled water at the calibration temperature. I've had only one hydrometer out of 4 that has worked correctly and been accurate. The others were leaked, were cracked, or were way off. Of course I broke the one that worked like it was supposed to :( Dirk

    final gravity high

Good idea! I don't have any extract left, but I'll call my LHBS and ask about it. Maybe I'll see if I can get a warm bottle of the stuff to ferment down to a lower gravity. There should be enough yeast in the bottle, right?

    final gravity high

thanks for all the replies, guys. I didn't realize that lager yeast is so different from ale yeast. I assumed all fermentations would take 10 days, max.:o Now that I read Palmer more carefully, I see it's a whole different animal. I guess my temps did fluctuate too much. Does anyone know...

    final gravity high

I bottled my California Common yesterday. After I finished bottling, I drank some, thought "hey, that's awesome for a flat beer". Then I measured the FG: 1.026. Way too high! (right?) Does anyone know what might have gone wrong? Here is the recipe: 6 lbs light dry extract 1 lb crystal 90L .5...

    google calculator

one nice thing about old units is that you can divide things up and come up with even numbers. If you have a solution of 1 lb of sugar with 1 gallon of water, and you want to scale that down by 1/8, you get 2oz in 1pint. By 1/4, you get 4oz in 1 quart, etc. 1/16 and 1/2 give you nice quantities...

    swing top bottles

I found two beers, Schwelmer Alt and Schwelmer Pils, at the Beverages & More in La Jolla, CA. It comes in very nice 500ml brown flip-top bottles. I liked the Alt, but drank lots of the Pils just for the bottles. They said they get it from a distributor in L.A., so if you live there, you may be...

bayou classic 30 qt - not

well, i am wondering if i'm just loosing my mind ... but the pot is a perfect cylinder, as far as I can tell, and has a mark at 3 gallons. Twice the height to 3 gallons is at the very most a half gallon shy of the top edge. I guess their markings could be off, I'll double check again before I...

bayou classic 30 qt - not

It appears my "30 qt" bayou classic aluminum turkey fryer pot is only 26 qt (6.5 gal), tops. Has anyone else noticed this? dirk

A way to find alcohol percentage without even opening the fermenter!

I just bought this scale on ebay: item#200059710501 It's a 55lb scale with 0.5 oz precision. If the weighing method works, it should give better than 2% accuracy for the Kaiser's example above. Not nearly as cool as a giant balance, but at $23 shipped, worth a try. mmh... on second...

    Steam/California Common/Bastard Lager

brewpastor, I'm new to this... I'm just wondering, with an OG of 1.053 and maximum attenuation of 71% (according to wyeast), how can you end up within the style guidelines (BJCP max FG 1.014)? The way I figure it, the maximum OG you could practically use is about 1.047, since both the wyeast...
