Easy to set. Pick a temp for plug 1 (cold) like 70deg, pick an offset like 2 deg, pick a temp for plug 2 (heat) like 64 deg, pick an offset like 2 deg.
Example using the above:
Refer will turn on at 72 deg and run until it hits 70. Heating element will turn on at 62 deg and run until...
I use a 40w ceramic with a small 110v clip on fan to distribute the heat. Works great. Cost me about $.70 per week with highs in the 50's and lows in the 20's. Right now I'm fermenting at 66 deg.
I started for fun in ~1979. Full boil extract recipes were available. Did about 10 batches (5 were good, 4 were ok and 1 i threw out.) Moved and didn't start brewing again until last month.
Biggest change is variety of kits, yeasts and larger focus on temperature, sanitation and wort chilling.
