Sweet taste at end of fermentation

I changed a few things and have gotten better results. I've started to leave the wort chiller in a bit longer to really get temps at pitch time below 64F. I've found that with a healthy starter the yeast has no problem getting going. I've also started hitting every batch with O2 right before I...

    Blown Up Fermenter

I went big on a beer last night, used a blow-off tube, and still had a HUGE mess this morning. I have a couple of questions for you guys, but I'll outline the brew first. About a three weeks ago, I brewed a blonde (pale ale?) with the intention of bottling and adding my big beer directly to...

Sweet taste at end of fermentation

Did you ever come up with some peace on your problem here? I too have had literally the exact problem plaguing me for the last eight or so brews. The beer is "drinkable" by my standards but by no means good. They have had that "sweetness" on the finish (and on the sides of the tongue as weird...

    Makes Me Want Icecream

I'm notorious for dumping the whole kettle in and letting the yeast sort it out if I had more boil off than expected 😱

    Makes Me Want Icecream

I've brewed dozens of all grain beers, never seen a fresh wort settle into the fermenter like this. Also I will be checking the snugness of the false bottom in my mash tun. An hour later and it's still like this. I'm sure it's fine, just curious why its layered??

    Feb 23 Boston Homebrew Competition

Thanks for a great competition. I submitted Murphy's Law; thrilled to have placed in American Ale, but I noticed it lists a club affilition for me which I don't belong to. I know that can throw a monkey wrench in the year end standings for best club so I wanted to pass that along. Was going to...

Purging O2 from Secondary with Corn Sugar

So I've got an amber ale thats been three weeks in the secondary. I just harvested about .75 oz (dry) cascade hops from a first year plant and decided I just want to dry hop this batch rather than bother with packaging this small amount of hops. However, I'm curious about what the beer would...

    Cutting Rhizomes From Potted Hops

Right, I'll just hold off then. When I get there though, what is the best way to cut the rhizomes? Just take sections from the bottom parts of the roots? Is there a way to take cuttings without removing the plant from the pot if I decide not to put them in the ground?

    Cutting Rhizomes From Potted Hops

I Currently have one each first year Chinook, Tettnanger, Cascade, and Hallertau hops growing in large pots; all are showing pretty good production (first to last in cone production). Once I harvest, and before winter, I would like to take some root cuttings if possible and start them in indoor...

Are my hops done for the year?

It sounds like your yellowing leaves are the same problem I had. I posted a few spots down (what do these leaves mean?) and got some good advice. I have pics up too so if yours look at mine I'd try the Ironite solution.

    What Do These Leaves Mean?

You're fine, I don't mind. From your pic it looks like you built your own planter? If I saw right, do you mind if I ask how much that cost you/how many rhizomes you can plant? I'm not committed yet to putting them in the ground as I know the root systems go crazy, and to get a decent sized...
