    Single Tier System

Hello All, I was just looking for some advice on a single tier system that I'm currently building, mostly on the pumps. Due to lack of funds I was going to get one and set up the system with the camlock quick disconnects but I'm afraid to give up the ability to fly sparge. Anyone brewing with...

    adding a ball valve

These are all great tips! Make sure when you install a thermometer you position it at the proper height. Too high on the kettle add you won't get readings when the liquid drops below the probe; too low and you risk damage to the thermometer from excessive heat produced by the burner.

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

It tasted alright, nothing too odd or out of place. I bottled last Saturday so I guess we'll see how it turns out. I didn't oversparge, the water was added just before the boil. I'll post up how it turns out!

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Hello everyone! I have a question for you all. I have brewed three batches of this beer, altering the recipe slightly, but every time it's turned out better than the time before. However the last brew session presented a problem. A mix up caused an accidental addition of too much water to the...

    How to check specific gravity?

Sorry guys, that was a typo on my part. Good to see so many comments though. It's a 100 ml glass cylinder. The top is about a half inch shy of the top of the hydrometer. A now obvious mistake on my part, I think it's just too small of a test tube.

    How to check specific gravity?

I think you might be on to something there. I bet my test tube is too small. It's a 1000 ml graduated cylinder.

    How to check specific gravity?

At the top it goes just above .990. When in water it reads in between .990 and 1.000.

    Lagers vs Ales

What I'd like to go for is a Dark Amber beer. I found a recipe for a dark amber lager. I don't have a way to regulate the fermenting temp at the moment. The basement is my fermentation station so the temp is usually around 60-65. I'm trying to go for a darker beer this time around. Just bottle a...

    How to check specific gravity?

Hydrometer help! So I have brewed 4 batches of beer now, 2 all grain and 2 extract (not a fan of the extract, got the kit as a gift). I got a new Hydrometer but every reading I have taken has not worked. The hydrometer sinks to the bottom of the test tube and bottoms out. The beer definitely has...

    Lagers vs Ales

Hello! I found a lager recipe that I would really like to brew. Unfortunately I do not have the capability of keeping the fermentation temperature at the proper level. What would happen if I used an ale yeast instead of lager yeast with this recipe? I guess the real question would be would this...

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Hello again! I will be bottling this beer in a couple days here and I was just wondering if there was a certain priming sugar you guys would recommend for this brew?

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Right on, thanks for the tip. I'll be swapping out the air lock caps asap. Just was wondering if it was common for it to happen or not. Anybody try dry hopping with this recipe? I have some whole cascades I picked this summer that I might throw in one of the carboys.

Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

So I brewed a batch of this on weds and stored it in 2, 5 gallon carboys at a friends house. We checked on it today only to find the airlocks clogged with foamy yeast solution. They had overflowed a little bit onto the carboys. We cleaned out the airlocks and put them back. Is it normal for...

    Hop Bags

Anyone know what I can use as a substitute for a hop bag. I forgot to pick one up and if there is a way I don't have to make a trip into town before I brew tomorrow I'd like to do that instead! would Muslin Cheesecloth work? Thanks!
