    Wheat beer w/ S-04?

I would try it. Could give a simple american wheat more character. You could call it an English wheat and you could use EKG to really make it unique. I'm sure it would be a fine beer, just different from the traditional styles.

Yes, you may be right about the activated carbon filter. They're cheap and could be used for more than just removing chlorine. It removes other sources of taste and flavor in water. I dont have any data to show if it would affect well water, but I'd recommend looking into using the carbon...

    pumpking ale question

I add my pumpkin during the boil. Yes, you get more crap in the fermenter, and yield suffers, but the flavor is outstanding.

I'd recommend a simpler approach. 2 filters. One for removing sediment and iron. The next one is a carbon filter to remove other tastes, like chlorine. I use an activated carbon filter for my 1.5bbl setup and love it. I'm just carbon filtering my city water. McMaster has all kinds of...

Help me pick a mill to motorize

Wow. Prudent responses. Very un-HBT like! I was considering using the BC, but have no familiarity with the other mills and if they're that much better.

55 gal drum mash tun - false bottom ideas?

Thanks. In reality it would never be more that about 80 gallons of liquid at a time, plus grain weight. That would be about 700 plus lbs. A lot, for sure. The thing I'm most concerned with is the casters. There are 8 of them, each "rated" to 150 lbs. 4 of them can support 600 lb in theory...

Help me pick a mill to motorize

I will be building a motorized mill with a 1/4 to 1/3 hp AC motor. I really dont know the difference between the schmidling, monster mills, or crankandsteins, etc. Can anyone help me understand the pros/cons and performance of them? I own a regular barley crusher mill and was even considering...

    Jaybird's Stainless False Bottoms

No way. I was wondering what that was. Its...ummm...trippy. I thought it was just a product of something holding it during cutting. Nicely done sir! Oh, and the gasket I made out of 1/2" silicone thermoplastic tubing with the ends connected. It works well so far. We'll see if it...

55 gal drum mash tun - false bottom ideas?

They actually have more support now. I added some diagonal links on the sides and back. It's sturdy. The boards are 2x4 studs, so they're strong. The angle of the photo shows the vertical studs on their thin axis. It feels very sturdy when I jump all over it. I think it will be fine when...

55 gal drum mash tun - false bottom ideas?

Well, here it is. I posted on Jaybird's false bottom thread as well. Fits nicely. I may bring the diameter of the gasket in a bit. The false bottom from Jaybird is beefy. It seems strong enough to not even have a support in the middle. It flexes, but I cant make it touch the bottom of the...

    W-34/70 and Diacetyl rest.

I've used it a few times and tried to do a diacetyl rest, but you never know if you got it at the right time - just before fermentation is complete. I find that just lagering cold for a few weeks makes the most impact on cleaning up the flavor. My advice would be try to do a diacetyl rest, but...

    Jaybird's Stainless False Bottoms

Here is the 21.5" diameter one Jaybird made for me and my 55 gallon drum mashtun. Saweet. It's very beefy, I may not even put supports in the middle.

Maybe I didn't explain very well. I bought a bigger heat exchanger using the logic you just laid out. I want the time to be the same for a larger volume. Inlet temps of all liquids remain the same. In order to increase the flow rate of wort I need to increase the heat transfer capacity of...

Dont be scared! Talk to a welder. They'll hook you up with what you need! Commercial breweries do it many different ways, but those that whirlpool like what you're talking about do not drain out the center bottom. They main drain on the bottom, but it would be on the perimeter. Some...

I agree, we need a new lobby on here called "nanobrewtalk.com"! Take it from me - you're in for an adventure! Lots of ways to skin this cat, thus no one here has the definitive answer to all your questions. That being said, there are lots of great ideas in any of these nano brewery threads...
