New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

I started doing the yeast scavenging method last year after watching some YouTube videos about it. I prep my mash water the night before and drop in some bread yeast and sugar, which theoretically scavenge all the oxygen in the water. Then I heat and mash in when I wake up, and I try to avoid...

FotHB XVII: New Year, New Beer!

I suppose people liking our beer is a good problem to have! I'll be smarter about bottling early in the future. 😊

FotHB XVII: New Year, New Beer!

Similar predicament for me, except that my issue was less technical and more that the beer drinkers in my house made their way through the Best Coast IPA in my offer way faster than I expected, before I could bottle some. So I will be brewing something nearly identical this week and will ship...

DIY small batch all in one system

This isn't equipment related, but since you are interested in small batch BIAB, I will also suggest you check out Bitter & Esters. It's a homebrew shop in New York that has a ton of great recipe kits, and they sell all of them in 1gal, 2.5 gal, and 5 gal sizes. I've brewed probably twenty of...

DIY small batch all in one system

I do 2.5 gallon BIAB myself, so I'm a big fan of small batches. Are you sold on electric? Most people who do batches this size use their stove, since you can easily get a rolling boil with these volumes. You may have another reason to prefer electric, but if not, consider just getting a nice 5...

    Fermentation Temperature Control

Yeah, you can do your airlock that way with starsan. Get an inkbird temp controller to hook up to the wine fridge, and you'll be good to go.

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

I read it as super-dell-ick, as in rhyming with psychedelic, but I think Super Derek might stick.

2022 FotD Secret Santa Beer Swap

Thanks for the cans @fourfarthing! The weirdest thing happened yesterday, I was listening to one of my regular podcasts and the host out of nowhere started talking about Suarez Family Brewing! He lives in Hudson, so I guess it makes sense, but he'd never mentioned it before. And I happened to be...

2022 FotD Secret Santa Beer Swap

Santa arrived last night! It's a great haul that I'm really excited to dig into. The t shirt is unusually artistic for a brewery, I love it!

Adding liquid fining agent into fermenter via gas post?

A lot of people use plastic syringes that they hook up directly to a QD. The benefit of the syringe is you can draw up a gelatin solution with no air in the syringe, so you really are doing it oxygen free. Not sure how you could avoid air getting in if you used a soda bottle.

    Yeast Shipping

I've only had one jar go bad, and it had been about six months at that point.

    Yeast Shipping

This! I started doing this about two years ago, and I'm so happy I did. Yeast used to be annoying for me because I buy ingredients for about 4-6 batches at a time to save on shipping (my lhbs is terrible). I prefer liquid yeast because most of my favorite strains, like Bell's house yeast and...
