    steeping vs mashing base grains

is there a reason to steep grains when doing all grain batches? I thought you would just throw it in with the mash. Never thought about it until I read your last line in quotation marks.

Rubbermaid 10 Gallon Cooler MLT Conversion

is a 10 gallon really necesarry for 5 gallon batches? It seems like more heat would be lost with it being that alrge.

Video of me brewing a Kolsch...

somehow I knew that any criticism would be quickly dealt with. I like the vid though! What were you using to filter all the gunk out on the way to the fermenter? (when pouring it)

    bottle bombs?

hehe I have a couple of digital scales - but as I was saying. I dont' know anything about what kind of C02 volume I'm aiming for in my beer. So far I've just been priming 3/4cup corn sugar per 5 gallons no matter what kind of beer it is.

    Brand New...Wort Not Cooling

took me over 3 hours to get my first batch cooled. I stupidly poured it into the fermenter without cooling the kettle whatsoever. (extract recipe) When you guys speak of no chill, are you letting it cool with the lid off?

    Aluminum Pot/oxidation layer is myth?

I did boil water in my new pot from Home Depot and it made a nice dark layer. I only ask because it's been over 2 weeks and I still haven't cleaned the pot. (it's got some nice crusty dried stuff inside of it) and i would hate to waste that much propane boiling another 7 gallons in it.

    bottle bombs?

I was going by this thread. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/corn-sugar-alternative-237276/ did I really over prime?

    bottle bombs?

sure is. Do you have any links about calculating priming sugar? I've read a few posts about desired c02 level but that seems over my head. I've been sticking to just the 3/4 cup of corn sugar until last night when I used plain sugar. (well organic) so, how do you think these things are gonna...

    Cleaning vs. Sanitizing

I did the exact same thing with my first batch... I don't see why they say everything included when there isn't a sanitizer. My recipe was a brown ale, and it ended up having a slight wine like taste. (kinda vinegar) it was barely noticeable though, and after 2 weeks in the bottle you really...

    bottle bombs?

what kind of swallow are we talking about gold? also forgot to mention this is the first time I primed with plain sugar. (well actually it was some organic sugar from trader joes.. looked kinda weird - but i Used 2/3 cup for the 5 gallons) I'm thinking I'll be okay since it was close to the FG...

    bottle bombs?

this recipe https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f66/centennial-blonde-simple-4-all-grain-5-10-gall-42841/ pretty bummed because it was my first AG. I did BIAB and I did notice lots of cloudiness during the first few bottles. no secondary It spent 9 days in fermentation, and that's the only FG I...

    bottle bombs?

Didn't realize it and bottled a little bit early. OG was 1.040 and I bottled at 1.010 should I expect anything scary to happen?

    Aluminum Pot/oxidation layer is myth?

been reading a lot about aluminum pots and still seem a little confused about it firstly, i still haven't cleaned mine (i know mistake) but I would like to scrub the crusty wort out without damaging the oxide layer - but no one ever bothered to respond to this post. Is the myth busted...
