Trials and tribulations of a first time brewer.....

Followed up this past weekend with another brew day (which took way too long to get here!!). This time around we did a darker brew (porter) and were aiming to really improve our OG compared to the last go around. The brew went well, we shaved 1 and a 1/2 hours off our last attempt and did much...

Trials and tribulations of a first time brewer.....

This is certainly going to be in my plans this next go around, we have a few things planned to make this process a little more efficient next recipe. It is an extremely in depth program a little overwhelming at first glance.

Trials and tribulations of a first time brewer.....

Is it ok to add sugar at this point? If so do I have to worry about using a special kind of sugar or use just standard sugar? Also is sanitizing an issue when adding something like that at this point??

Trials and tribulations of a first time brewer.....

Well, fermentation is slowed down, no where near the amount of action that was previously when I posted the pics. I have been giving it a swirl every few days just to make sure everything that can get eaten up by all the yeasties does!! I took a hydrometer reading today and it came out to...

Curious if my starter is ok or not worth using...

Again good info, I am starting to get a good grasp of understanding some of the science behind the whole yeast element of the recipes (not to say I still have quite a bit to learn). The other reason I am hopeful this will turn out is this is a Purple Haze clone recipe and upon bottling calls...

true that...I'll certainly have my detailed checklist next time!!! I was glad we took the time to keep notes on improvements and things NOT to do.

Curious if my starter is ok or not worth using...

Dude this is very good info!! With this information is it safe to assume that I will most certainly have to wait a little longer than the given 14 day primary fermentation period?? Either way this turns out this will certainly be my new standard practice for yeast that is beyond its peak (or...

Trials and tribulations of a first time brewer.....

WOW!! Awesome feedback....with brew knowledge like this who needs BREW DAY HELP?!?!?! As to the hydrometer reading there were quite a bit of bubbles we actually had to wait for the bubbles to go down until we could read it and even then it was a rough guess at best (from what we could read)...

Trials and tribulations of a first time brewer.....

IT took WAY longer than I ever expected!!! First off we did start with an AG recipe. Honestly it went well it just took so damn long for a number of reasons I am guessing: first time doing the process, inefficient boiling schedule and trying to learn how to regulate mash temps, the burner was...

Curious if my starter is ok or not worth using...

yeh, she is rocking and rolling I pitched Tuesday like we originally planned (decant the beer and pitched all the yeasty goodness). Weds morning she acted like the pink slime in ghost busters II bubbling and quite foamy. Needless to say I may go back and purchase a bunch more of these...

Curious if my starter is ok or not worth using...

N00B DISCLAIMER: THIS IS MY FIRST BREWING EXPERIENCE!! First off I did not realize until after I purchased my liquid yeast that it was past its ideal use date. I purchased WLP011: European Ale Yeast and to my surpise it was on sale (little did I know) because the to use date was Jan 2012...
