    Possible Infection in Peach Kettle-Sour

Here a a slightly better photo I hope, taken with the lid off. The oily sheen around the clumps should be more visible.

    Possible Infection in Peach Kettle-Sour

So I decided to venture into the world of sour brewing over labor day weekend, and decided to do a kettle sour in order to keep my bottling equipment clean. I went for a Belgian sour blonde, basing my grist on the Rare Barrel lambic recipe. Mash, 15 minute boil, sour with goodbelly, 45 minute...

    Infection in Stored Yeast/Yeast Viability

Thanks, I had similar thoughts about viability. I didn't write very clearly, the possible infection is on the saison yeast, which is actually from the end of July, putting it's viability around 70%. The 1056 is what I've had since April. But, even though the saison yeast is plenty viable, I...

    Infection in Stored Yeast/Yeast Viability

So I'm planning to brew a couple of batches next weekend, a saison and an IPA. I have saved yeast in the fridge for each batch (wyeast 3711 and 1056) harvested from overbuilt starters. I made a new starter this afternoon, but when I opened my 3711 jar the contents started lightly fizzing...

    Cyber Monday GIVEAWAY!

Received a gift certificate to buy my first brewing setup a year ago last week. 45 gallons, numerous DIY projects, and some great beer later, here's the current setup. Moving to all grain over the Christmas break, a new paddle would be amazing!

    Seattle Brewery Recommendations

Before you do anything else, visit Holy Mountain brewing in interbay, between downtown and Fremont. Once you go there, you may not make it anywhere else. However, if you visit more breweries, absolutely check out Fremont Brewing and Schooner Exact. Schooner has good food too. Rueben's is great...

Stir Plate Build - Computer Fan Won't Spin

Well, the culprit was a defective fan. I guess the lesson here is that if you're pretty sure a part is broken, replace it with a new part, and it still doesn't work, replace it again. The yeast is happily multiplying in preparation for today's brew session!

Stir Plate Build - Computer Fan Won't Spin

I can try switching wires on the switch tonight. However, I did hook the fan up to the power adapter wires directly with no spin. The current detector beeps like crazy when I touch the center of the fan after doing this, but no movement. Seems like a broken fan, but after trying a second fan...

Stir Plate Build - Computer Fan Won't Spin

I've been interested in getting a stir plate for a while, and after reading various DIY forums, figured I'd build my own. I went off of the build linked below, modifying for a cigar box: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=86252 The only problem is that my fan won't spin! At...

Winter Seasonal Beer Holly (Christmas Ale)

Thanks all, glad to know it'll make a difference. Cold crashing this week, and I'll definitely post a picture when it's carbed and ready to drink.

Winter Seasonal Beer Holly (Christmas Ale)

I brewed this two weeks ago and it's been happily fermenting away in my newly converted mini-fridge fermentation chamber at 64F. OG was 1.079, my first reading last night showed 1.018. A little sweeter than I had hoped for, but still great. I've been excited about the ability to cold crash...

Winter Seasonal Beer Holly (Christmas Ale)

The French press just filters the spices out of the tea. The filter is slightly more porous than a paper coffee filter, which allows more oils through when brewing coffee. It makes a huge difference in body/mouthfeel with coffee, but I can't imagine it would affect the overall beer. The press...
