    Grainfather!!

There is a 1 gallon-or-so volume discrepancy between the pdf file and the online calculator (calculator is higher). I've been using the written instructions since those levels seem to be working better for me. I watched the video, too. For me, letting it drain first is giving me better...

    Grainfather!!

....., I don't know if this will help, but I had the same problem (except for my first couple batches which efficiency was way high as I was stoked about following their directions precisely--cool new equipment)... 1. DON'T use beersmith for water levels (but DO use it for recipe...

This is what they recommend for 6 gallon recipes. For 5 gallon recipes, they use 6.4 instead of 7.4 in their figures. i recalculated for 6.9 as I tend to formulate 5.5 gallon recipes. This tends to work for me. I also only lose about 2 quarts of wort for a 90 minute boil. Brewsmith uses...

Getting your kids involved as "assistant brewers"

Ages 12-18, mom & dad always let me go with them to breweries and wineries around the country while on family camping trips. Of course, since this would've been between 1982-1988 things may be a little bit different these days. This is probably why I started brewing beer in 1992. Mom made...

    Sparging on the Grainfather

Okay, thanks for the info...I've done several between 10-17Lbs grain and getting around 65%...78% is much better. Will try it, but also keep digging to get over 80. Improving this system's efficiency is tough to figure out! I need help from a German ha.

Yeah, along with seabrew8 I was thinking the same thing. I am also going to try this and see if it works...will have room in the brewing schedule 2 weeks from now--maybe a simple kolsch or pale ale. If y'all are game, please keep updates going :mug::mug::mug:

    Grainfather!!

To Yambor44: Just thought I'd throw it out there that in my experience, beer always tastes better in a keg if you can stand waiting 30 days. My beers taste ok (green) after a week of conditioning; but really, they take on an all new personality if you can wait a month--perhaps even two in...

    Grainfather!!

Yeah, I never have a problem with boiling like some. It's not a high rolling boil like you get with gas, but also I never have a problem with scorching. I'm into the fifth brewing session with it within a 6 week time frame, and that is a miracle for me! So far, I've brewed an alt beer, IPA...

    Grainfather!!

these posts are still great! thanks everybody for sharing. In an attempt to get rid of old stock, I'm trying a pliny type double IPA clone with 13 lbs 2-row, 3/4 lb 60L & 3/4 lb caramunich (some malto dexterin & turbinado to boot)...the system holds 14.5 lbs grain & water to match perfectly...

Dogfish Head 120 Min IPA Clone

Its advertized capacity is 19.5 Lbs (some say 20 Lbs); so, yes it can handle the grain bill. This makes me happy.

    Grainfather!!

Mine came in last Friday. This is Sunday night, and I'm brewing my second batch through it (1st one Saturday night I considered a trial run--it didn't come out perfectly, but good enough for 4 gallons of a London pub-type ale kit bought from my LHBS). Tonight's brew is my recipe for a...
