Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

I'm getting a pressure cooker today! :rockin: I have washed some yeast from the last couple of batches, do I make starters first from those before freezing, to make sure yeast is active and healthy, or do I just collect yeast slurry and put it in vials with glycerin/water solution? Also, how...

Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

Now I’m convinced. Thank you all for input! :) Is there a way to avoid buying a pressure cooker? Will a baby bottle sterilizer do(Philips AVENT Digital Steam Sterilizer)? My SWMBO hates messy kitchen and since we already have that sterilizer sitting on the countertop she won’t mind me using...

Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

But isn’t it the same for a vial? If the ratio of vial mix is 50% yeast, 25% water and 25% glycerin, wouldn’t this be true to these proportions? Just imagine a fermenter half-full of pure yeast, what chance of survival a tiny colony of nasty bacteria has?

Guide to Making a Frozen Yeast Bank

One thing I don't understand, why Starsan is enough to SANITIZE EVERY STEP of the beer making but won't cut it when it comes to yeast storage? Also, if Glycerin sold in pharmacies, shouldn’t it be sterile or clean enough(USP grade) to suffice right out of a container? Think this, we...

    Boiling hops

    Thank you everyone! :mug:

    Boiling hops

With extract, do I boil bittering hops (water only) first for let's say 45 min and then add an extract and boil a little more to make 60 min? I don't want to make a beer darker with 60 min extract boiling, it's not nessesary to boil LME or DME for over 10-15 min anyway right?

    Belgian Tripel recipe

Agreed. $6 is not a problem, I just wanted to save some time not making a starter :)

    Belgian Tripel recipe

I was looking everywhere for some info on that yeast without any luck. One guy sent a request to Brewferm about that yeast and reply was pretty generic:"In every beerkit the same yeast is used, namely a reugular Saccharomyces cerevisiae, top fermenting universal use." The Diabolo batch is...

Do I need to add Irish moss at the time of boiling? Any updates on that Brewferm's dry yeast?

    Belgian Tripel recipe

Thanks for all your suggestions here! I got an idea but don't know how it's gonna turn out... I have a 5 gal batch of Breferm Diabolo(LME kit with some mods) brewing right now, what if I use the yeast cake from that batch? It was a dry yeast pack, not sure exactly what kind but Breferm is a...

    Belgian Tripel recipe

Oops, forgot the sugar. I don't think there is a huge difference between Candy sugar or regular table sugar, correct me if I'm wrong. Stopped by my LHBS to pick-up grains. So, here is the modified recipe: 10 lbs Briess Pilsner LME 2 lbs White sugar(cane) 0.5lb Carapils 0.5lb Belgian...

    Belgian Tripel recipe

My first post :) Please help me to figure out this recipe, I already have these hops, do I need to substitue them with something else or not? I think hops are not as important in Belgian beers as the right yeast strain. Is this correct? Also, I want this beer to be strong ~10% ABV 5...
