    Is starter okay?

Thanks all! So could i just boil up a little DME, cool, and add to the flask to re-energize? If so, I guess i'd just decant to make room for this?

    Is starter okay?

So i made a 1L starter from WL001 about 2 weeks ago which has been sitting in the fridge (foil covered flask). I did have some spillover issues when i made it, but everything looks good as far as I can tell. I would like to brew this evening and was wondering if the starter would still be okay...

Cheapo fermentation chamber..how will it work?

I've read that these cheap styrofoam coolers don't hold water too well...will leak out over a few days. I do have a large rope pail that I can use for a swamp cooler, but figured i'd give this a go. I just put in a 5 gal bucket of 70 degree water and will see what happens. I know it won't be...

Cheapo fermentation chamber..how will it work?

Just looking for some thoughts/suggestions regarding a cheapo fermentation chamber. I have an Omaha steak Styrofoam cooler that I cut a hole in the lid so that my 6 gal plastic fermenting bucket cut slide through. I plan on just placing frozen bottles of water in the cooler (no water). One...

    Yeast slurry question?

Sorry..should have clarified. The "end of boil" in the recipe is 60 minutes. But there is no mention of dry hopping.

    Yeast slurry question?

Thanks again for all your help!! I think I may decant and make a second starter..just have to find a larger glass jar. By the way, it is an extract..and just realized that it does not mention dry hopping?? Hop schedule is as follows, 1oz centennial pellet hops at 10 minutes, 1 oz chinook at...

    Yeast slurry question?

When you say borderline on yeast count, I'm guessing that there would still be more yeast count had I not made a starter at all? Even with the small loss? Oh and I'm making an IPA...no idea what the gravity should be? Also, your reference to 'egg drop soup' is pretty spot on to what I'm seeing.

    Yeast slurry question?

Thanks! It is WL001yeast. And I left in the fridge overnight again and it is still somewhat cloudy, better but still cloudy. Is that okay?

    Yeast slurry question?

Yeah..the "stringy" (best i can describe) is very small and I guess more resembles a clump? I'll continue to cold crash and see how it clears up.

    Yeast slurry question?

So I attempted to make a yeast starter for the first time. First off, I used too small a flask (consider it a lesson learned). I tried to make a 900 mL starter in a 1 L flask. I used just under a 1/2 cup dme. Also, I do not have a stir plate. I just agitated every so often. Anyway, the...

Please Help! Yeast starter overflowed and smells sour..

Thanks for the replies! So I think I'm gonna cold crash my starter tonight and brew tomorrow or the next day. Quick question though, Is it okay to cold crash now even though the krausen is still building? It appears to be ready to overflow again. Also, when you say dormant sample are you...

Please Help! Yeast starter overflowed and smells sour..

Mine smells okay..just a little sour or cidery. As I said the empty vial has the same smell. I'm also concerned that I lost some..I guess that it will be okay?

Please Help! Yeast starter overflowed and smells sour..

Hey all..I planned on brewing an ipa extract kit this evening and made up a starter last night. The yeast I used is WLP001 california ale yeast. I made a 1L starter and I do not have a stir plate. I followed all the directions to make the starter, and just swirled to agitate a few times. I...
