question on determining alcohol content of beer

Hello, I brewed a partial mash IPA 3 weeks ago. I added DME toward the end of boil to boost the alcohol content. When I went to take the OG, the beaker of wort was pretty sludgy and not clear at all (trub, etc.) and read 1.086. (I filled the primary bucket with the wort and then when I got...

another rubber stopper in the beer question...

Hi all, Yes, another post about rubber stopper falling into the beer. I looked around other posts, but couldn't find a specific answer. My IPA has been in the primary for 3 weeks. I transferred to glass carboy to dry hop, pushed airlock and stopper a little to hard and the stopper fell...

should I rack to secondary before dry hopping?

Hi all, Brewed an IPA partial mash 1 week ago today. Instructions in kit say to dry hop after 1 week. Should I just open it up and throw the pellets in? Or should I rack to a carboy then add the hops? I have never racked to a secondary before, any tips, thoughts, opinions on doing so...

bottling day! how do I filter out hop pellets from dry hop??

Hi all, So I brewed an IPA, then dry hopped with 2 oz of hop pellets, just threw them in the primary after 2 weeks. Now its been 2 weeks since dry hop, how do I filter out the pellet debris? Will it have sank to the bottom? I've read some use pantyhose? But I'm confused as to where you...

I've had same off flavor with first 3 brews, thinking of using secondary?

So does the thermometer stick to the outside of the bucket like a sticker, sort of like those ones I had back in the day for my fish tank?

I've had same off flavor with first 3 brews, thinking of using secondary?

Um the recipe called for 8lbs pale malt extract, it was thick and molasses like. Is that LME? the grains used for the partial mash were 1lb crystal malt, .5 pound honey malt, .5 pound biscuit malt. Also used white labs yeast california ale. And yes all the yeasts have been different strains

I've had same off flavor with first 3 brews, thinking of using secondary?

Beer is green meaning it needed more time in primary? Each time I let them stay in primary for 4 weeks, and bottles for 3 weeks. I don't have a temperature regulator so I just let it do it's thing with whatever weather we're having here in southern Ca. But I think it's usually around 70...

I've had same off flavor with first 3 brews, thinking of using secondary?

Hi all, I've brewed 4 different batches of brews so far, all partial mash, and each time I feel like I can taste a distinct flavor, even though they were all different beers (brown ale, cream ale, bavarian hef, and a holiday spiced ale). I can't tell what this off flavor is, as I am new to...

How long does beer usually actively ferment?

My beer has been in the primary for about 5 days, and I still have pretty active airlock bubbling going on. It had really intense fermentation, to the point where it was spilling beer up and out of the airlock and onto the lid, and now (after cleaning the mess) it has slowed down but is still...

3 weeks in bottles, not very carbed, any ideas?

Hi all, I brewed two 5 gallon batches. One is a honey cream ale, the other is a winter ale. I brewed them within a day of each other. They have been in bottles for a little over 3 weeks now. I tasted a bottle of each at exactly the 3 week mark. The honey cream ale, a lighter ale with abv of...

Does refrigeration stop the carbing process?

The beers have been carbing for about 2.5 weeks now. I plan to give them away in a week or so. I think it should be ok. I have 2 different kinds of beers, a honey cream ale which i think will be in the 3-4% alcohol range, and a winter spice beer which should be in the 6% range. Does the...

Does refrigeration stop the carbing process?

Not another carb question!! Arggghhh! haha, yeah, but a quick one. Does refrigerating the bottles stop the carbonation process? Im planning to give away beers for xmas and wondering if I should tell my friends and fam to wait a while before refrigerating. Thanks!

does head space in bottes affect carbonation?

Hi everyone, I bottled 2 separate 5 gal. batches of beer a week ago, and wondering how much the head space left in the beer bottle has an affect on the carbonation (or anything else for that matter). I didnt have a bottling wand at the time, so I filled the bottles from the spigot. In the...
