Sam Adams Boston Ale clone or close?

Not really my recipe. It's the original recipe with the hops amount converted to weight. The extra 2 lbs of DME was suggested by you a few posts up to bring the OG up to 1.054. According to BeerSmith, the SRM for Mr. Clean's recipe would be 7.5. The recipe I typed would be 8.9.

Sam Adams Boston Ale clone or close?

So, does this sound about right? How long should the dry hops stay in? 2.00 lb Light DME (8.0 SRM) 3.30 lb Amber LME (12.5 SRM) 3.30 lb Light LME (3.0 SRM) 0.60 oz Goldings, East Kent (60 min) 0.60 oz Fuggles (60 min) 0.60 oz...

Sam Adams Boston Ale clone or close?

What would be the weight of these hops? I don't see how you would get the same consistency using tablespoons as the measurement.

    First Non-kit Brew

So this recipe uses two different batches of EKG hops, one at 4.5%, the second at 5.0%. Using your formula, if I had all 4.5% EKG, I'd use 1.5 oz. at 60 minuets, and .56 oz at 20 min. to get the correct HBU's? You say you'd add the ME after the boil. The three kits I've brewed had me add it...

    First Non-kit Brew

I'm considering my first non-kit brew in a couple of months. I'd like to try the Red Dog ESB here on HBT. Since I'm not ready for full grain yet, I'll use 5.6 pounds of Alexander's Unhopped Pale Malt Extract in place of the grain. Everything else will remain the same. I'm having problems...

    Kolsch too dark?

Parker36: Yeah, it's actually a BB though. This is only my third brew, and first racking to a secondary. I was expecting it to be more golden then red even in the BB. BigEd: I'll be partial boiling for a while. My gas stove has a high-btu burner that does a good job with the 3 gallon pot so...

    Kolsch too dark?

I brewed up Midwest's Cologne Kolsch and racked it to secondary on the 23. Although it's nice and clear, it seems way too red to me. Looking on Wikipidia, kolschs are supposed to be rather light. Using this SRM chart, mine looks to be somewhere between 16 to 20. Is it possible I overcooked...

    Question about hops...

Thanks marubozo. The instructions with the kits say nothing about taking the hops out even if you use a bag. I'm glad I didn't mess anything up. I defiantly noticed a drop in trub quantity in my second brew. That was the main reason I decided to use boil bags.

    Question about hops...

I'm just finished my third brew, Midwest's Cologne Kolsch. While cleaning up, I got to wondering about the hops. My first brew, I just dumped the pellet hops in the boil. This, of course, resulted in the hops staying in the wort during fermenting. For the last two, I used a nylon hop bag and...

    Outdoor Brewing..

Something just popped into my head while doing my (inside) brew tonight. This is a question for those of you who brew outdoors and have a heightened sense of taste for your brew... Can you detect any difference in the same recipe brewed outside in the spring from that in any other month...

    Undissolved DME?

Thanks doggage. I just took the bag out of the jar. It stills has a slight hop aroma, but I'm not going to worry about it.

    Undissolved DME?

I just finished my second brew, the True Brew Oktoberfest style ale. While cleaning up the brew pot, I noticed some small sugar looking grains in the sink. There's no indication of burning, so I'm not worried about that, but is there a problem with fermenting a wort with possible undissolved...

    Pour over ice?

What I did on my last brew (first non Mr. Beer, and first 5 gallon brew) was to clean, sanitize and fill a couple of gallon milk jugs with water. Put them in the freezer a few days before the brew day and use them in the fermenter before poring in the wort. With a 2.5 gallon boil, it only took...

    Fermentation Restarted.

Thanks guys. I checked yesterday and today and SG was steady at 1.016. I bottled it up this afternoon. I put the bottles in a couple of coolers and locked the lids down to contain the mess if there's a blowout.. The lid seemed to be easier to get off each time. I don't know if it's getting...

    Fermentation Restarted.

Recipe is Midwests Irish Red Ale. OG was 1.048 and, according to BeerSmith, FG is estimated at 1.010. Is .006 considered close in the brewing world? The actual OG was .006 higher than what BeerSmith estimated as well.
