A couple inches of my coil sit above the wort on 5 gallon batches and i have not seen any significant loss in efficiency. I build mine for a specific kettle but when i upgraded the new kettle was wider, dropping the wort level below my top coils and i cant tell a difference in cooling time.

You are reaffirming my thoughts from my research. I was considering if i went with one with the BG14 I would be doing a little reinforcement welding as there is no way i would trust those legs with 35+gallon boil.
