It sounds like you all are running into some expensive beans; my LHBS has em in a pack for 6.80 containing 12 beans. Being part of a local brew club takes 10% of as well so they are about 50 cents a pop.
I soaked 4 beans in about a 3 shots of Froggy B vodka (80 proof) after splitting...
Yeah, It tasted OK when checking the gravity, it was only after being put in the keg that it had the off taste. I was fairly sure that even alot of star san would not affect the taste, but its the main thing I can imagine. Could mold give consistent off tastes?
O.G. was 1.052, Final gravity was 1.012
fermentation went strong with a high krausen for several days.
I didnt re-hydrate the yeast, which was Safale-05.
Made this brew a month or so ago and put it in the keg 2/4/11. Though the brew was clear in the carboy (after adding gelatin) it remains cloudy in the glass, (though it is a bit clearer than it was at the first beer from the keg).
The cloudyness is less strange than the taste, which is...
Ahhh I see. I did not really know that was the point of the secondary, though it seems like a "duh" to me now. For the longest time I just did 7 days primary 7 days secondary as a general rule unless the recipe specified. No longer shall I be so constricted!
Thanks Revvy!
Hey mate, this looks tasty!
I have a friend that asked if I could brew him an "extra porter"; hes all about the chocolate but hes not a fan of the coffee flavors. I suppose I was curious how the brew you made was without the coffee? I've been itching to use the chocolate nibs for some time...
It shouldn't hurt and would impart some flavor/nose, I imagine the brew will be a good and tasty wheat regardless. I might have been a bit pessimistic saying you would'nt get too much flavor from the oranges in the primary as it depends on the amount of oranges to start with and temperature...
I know this is an old thread (somewhat), but I just want to let you know whenever I want a laugh, I am going to read some of the excerpts from
http://www.heptune.com/farts.htm.
You'll find that if you add the oranges directly to the primary you won't retain much citrus flavor - much of it will be lifted away with the CO2. Throwing some of the peels (no pith) into the boil will add some as well as if you let it sit in the secondary.
For bottles, you would be better off sanitizing them by boiling them opposed to using a cleaner like StarSan, assuredly better than something like oxyclean or bleach (not that they don't work, but I find these strong bases need to be washed out several times over to rid the smell.) A good boil...
Hey guys
So, I brewed this 14 days ago and just racked it to the secondary yesterday with some gelatin to clear. I added half a tablespoon to some warm water and threw that in the carboy before siphoning in the brew.
I was curious about how long it would take to clear, the brew is lookin'...
Ah, Thanks BierMuncher, you cleared matters up for me! *symbol crash*
Widened my perspective and increased my understanding of the secondary; Thanks again!
