    Pictures of hop plants

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. Busy year with raising little kids. Fortunately my hops are mature and mostly self sufficient at this point, other than watering on occasion. I have been very hands off this year, but happy with the production I’m seeing! Brewing my annual wet hop pale...

Lettig hops grow at an angle

Yep, that trellis looks totally fine to me. As kent88 mentioned, there’s no way to know how big the yield will be going into it. You won’t really know until after 3-4 seasons. Sorry I couldn’t tell you how far male hops can send pollen. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hop plant in the...

Is this a rhizome I can cut and replant?

I’ve had luck in the past taking shoots like that to propagate new plants for friends. I’m trying to start a new Alpharoma plant for a friend this year. Here are a couple pics that show how mature hops can try and take over a particular spot. This was a couple weeks ago during my annual...

    Alpharoma/Rakau hops

This is how big my Alpharoma plant got last season, 3rd year. It hit the top of the line, at 20’ and then probably grew another 3-4 feet which drooped down. Admittedly it doesn’t get a full 12 hours of direct sunlight because of it’s proximity to the house. So your plant may grow larger/wider.

Best way to use homegrown hops?

I use two generic HVAC filters on top of a box fan. Set it on top of two chairs for air flow. Secure the two halves with painters tape. Super cheap. Takes 2 days to reach ~25% residual moisture content. I also live in Colorado, it’s super dry here. This was my Alpharoma harvest last week.

Do you harvest a variety all at once or in stages?

Nice harvest! I’d say most of the time I harvest in batches. It really depends. My cascade seems to have the most variability in ripening. But usually I have enough ready at once to do a wet hop ale. This year for example I brewed my 10 gallon wet hop and then 2 weeks later harvested and...

    Beginnings to flower?

I've never seen this on my plants, but it certainly looks like hermaphroditic behavior.

    "Pruning" First year plant

Do you have a picture? I’d say that it’s probably fine to do nothing this year. My Cascade always gets super shrubby on the lower part of the plant. The side arms on the lower nodes start growing early and super long. In future years you may want to trim all early side arms on the lower 3-4...

    Great Lakes Hops Proprietary Varieties

I am curious to see how that beer turns out. I’ve been interested in hearing a review on GLH’s proprietary hops. My standard hopping schedule for a hoppy 5 gallon batch is as follows: - 2 oz hops at flameout, whirlpool 5 mins - Cool to <150 F, stop the chill, add 2 more oz of hops, whirlpool...

    Wild hops on the balcony?

Nice find! I have never in my life come across a wild hop plant. Supposedly they do grow natively here in Colorado.

    Beginnings to flower?

Sorry I missed your thread. Yep those are indeed lady flowers! Always cool to get some cones in year one.

    Sleep, Creep, Leap Pictures

I thought this might be an interesting thread for any first time hop growers who are trying to determine what “normal” hop growth is for a 1st year plant. And what to expect in subsequent years. Total growth in any year obviously depends on a LOT of factors. But hopefully my series of...

    Pictures of hop plants

The difference between 1st year and 3rd year hop plants is pretty staggering. If you’re a first time grower, you certainly shouldn’t be comparing your plant to mine. Climate, soil, total sunlight, variety and growing conditions all play a big role. I have a few 3rd year plants and a few...
