Kettle volume & dilution calculations - please help!

My measurements from my recent brew day do not make mathematical sense, unless i am totally missing something. Pre-boil volume was 1.049, measured with both hydrometer and refractometer at room temp. I had 7 gallons at 170 degrees (or 6.7 gal using 96% shrinkage calc) Post-boil volume was...

Will pitching a second yeast change the flavor?

If i were to pitch some champagne yeast to a stuck fermentation and it fermented my beer further, would that remove the flavor characteristics provided by the first pitched yeast?

brew day from hell? need advice asap!

I have an 8 gallon pot, which is a little small for my AG batches (7 gallon pre-boil). I had a small boil over at hot break and so i just pulled out about 1/2 gallon into my bucket and added back over the next 15 mins when the boil was more stable (and allowed for some evaporation). Seemed to...

Cider in keg also used for beer?

Thanks for the responses - i must have been recalling advice concerning plastic carboys / buckets.

Cider in keg also used for beer?

I have only one keg and was wondering if there would be any problems with using it for both beer and cider. I would clean it of course in between with PBW, but i am wondering if either the cider or beer would leave some flavors which would mess up the other.

    og question

You can use software such as beersmith to automatically compute the additional fermentables to add to your boil in order to arrive at a target ABV. This is nice because it will also show the impact on IBU and color.

Using a Hydrometer with 1 Gallon Batches

You could also invest in a refractometer to decrease the sample size taken for each reading.

5 weeks in and still bubbling?

This question was recently asked on the brewing network (brew strong i think) and Jamil suggested that it may be due to wild yeast contamination, since in most typical cases the bubbling will stop.

    Sierra nevada torpedo clone

wow that is a lot of hops, and strong ones too. No wonder that beer is so potent.

    Commercial IPAs

I have tried several of the really commercial IPA's (available in safeway) and the one that i enjoy the most is the Lagunitas IPA. That beer has the bitterness, but also has a ton of the sweet hop aroma. If you want to try something a little stronger the lagunitas maximus is also great.

    Should i add extra LME?

Since it is my first time with this recepie I just dumped it all from the start of the boil

    Should i add extra LME?

Brewed it using 8 lbs of extract and it definitely is dark, and og ended up at 1.060.

    Should i add extra LME?

I am using US 05 dry yeast, and i am leaning towards only including 8lbs. Gonna brew on Saturday so we will see how it goes.

    Should i add extra LME?

I purchased the American Pale Ale II kit from B3 and since they were out of 8 lb bags of extract, they gave me a 9 lb bag. The recipe is generating an expected OG of 1.056 and IBU of 60.5 at 8lbs and 1.062 / 57.6 at 9lbs of extract (beersmith). The recipe is already above average IBU for a...
