That last photo you show is not my setup. Mine uses a 1/2" welding spud for the ball valve. The photo you show is a pipe coupler soldered to a keg and to a electrical faceplate.
Yes, the flat aluminum bar is my volume marking stick. I marked lines with a scratch awl, and then stamped numbers on it.

I built this electric kettle for small batches. Finding the keg was the hard part. But it is rock solid and easily boils 5 gallons with 2000W.
