I want to grow hops but squirrels eat everything!

I have had limited squirrel problems with other crops in my yard. They ate all my cherrys off the tree one year. They ate all my walnuts, too. Then I got even. 100 squirrels a year for me.... No more crop damage. Lots of shooting practice, too. Now if I so much as open the door they run...

So, what you're saying is piss on it? :drunk:

You need hops? I need harvest help!

And thank you for helping harvest! I have your grain bucket and step stool here. All the cones are off the bines now. Guess it's time to pull 'em down and bed the plant for next year. Meantime the hops will keep giving for some time to come! :tank:

May have vacuum packed a couple aphids...any issue?

Well, first I'd say they breathed their last.... Then I'll say I always remember which components I put in my brew that are sterilized by the boil.... :rockin: Then, last, I guess how many aphids I put in the boil might be the other variable  Some tiny fraction of a...

You need hops? I need harvest help!

I live in the Skagit Valley, once the hops capital of WA, before we found out seed crops paid more. I just grow for my own use, and have a bumper crop of Fuggles this year. Want some? Come harvest, and we'll split the pickings. You'll need to bring a container to take your portion home, and a...

How to check your propane tank.

Yeah, I have one on my grill tank. It works just like I'd think it would. It reads "green" right up until you run out, at which point it says you're out. Problem with a pressure gauge is that the pressure in the tank is pretty constant until there is no liquid left. At that point you have a...

    Seattle Pickin' Time?

I am north of you in Burlington. My hops are definitely not ready yet. I have picked them early and they get a grassy taste in the beer. I know the weather is not in our favor, but I am sticking it out. I hope it is sunny for long enough to have the cones show some dry tips. If so, I have a...

Holy Smokes! Set off a fermentation bomb!

I wish I had a bigger fermenter.... I'll check temp It has a gutted airlock hooked to 1/2" hose as a ghetto blowoff tube now. It's in my fermenting fridge, set to 65F That carries off a fair bit of exo-therm. I don't know as I have a way to measure the middle of the bottle temp, but the way...

Holy Smokes! Set off a fermentation bomb!

Maybe an inch or 1.5" I thought about pouring 1/2 of it off, as 1/2 the trub would have been plenty, but I'd have just thrown the rest away, so I let'er rip. Might have to adjust a bit if I use the technique in the future, and I think I will. What I probably should be doing is rigging up to...

Holy Smokes! Set off a fermentation bomb!

I brewed a wit last week. Wanted to do another batch, and didn't have another yeast pack, so I boiled the kettle, cooled it, sent batch 1 to secondary, and threw the 2nd batch in the primary with the trub from the 1st. 90 min later it is running over the 6 gal better bottle, and the air lock...

    Hops are already up...

I am 2 hrs S of the Vancouver in BC, and have hops up all over. My oldest plant has 20-30 little shoots up. I think I need to thin. I have already robbed rhizomes, and those are coming up. I planted rhizomes from a friend, and those are coming up. As long as I don't get a late freeze that...

    Washington State Rhizome availability

My thoughts: 1. One 'zome is enough, but 2 is better. If one doesn't come up, the planting location is dormant for the year. One of 2 will come up. If 2 come up, mistreat them- I'll tell how below. 2. A friend has Mt. Hood across from Cascades. They are 8' apart at the ground, but because he...

How long do your lagers go in primary?

I started a lager last week. I have had several lagers end primary in a week. This one's still bubbling away, and was 1.030 when I checked it last. I changed one thing- I'm colder in primary than I've done in the past- 50F. What do ya think? 2 weeks? The sample I drew for gravity was really...

    Yeast starter and stir plate

I run mine continuously for 24 hours. When I do a 2 liter starter, I have gone 48 hours, but it is apparent that the starter wort is spent, and the yeasties are ready for another meal.
