Broken Glass Carboy Horror Stories Compendium

I'm not all that scared of using glass but have taken precautions to keep them together just in case

    New Kegging Questions

Check out the company I listed above. The setup is great, came put together mostly, and when I had a question about stuff they were more than happy to answer/clear up stuff. I'm certain that other suppliers are the same but Keg Connection is who I ordered from. BTW, get the 525SS Perlicks as...

Affects on beer when mash temp drops from 152 > 140's

Check your thermometer before every session (boiling water) to make sure it is reading correctly. I couldn't figure out why my brews kept finishing with really low FG's till I discovered my thermometer was reading 6 degrees low at mash temps.

    10 Gallon or Bulk Grain

The only thing wrong with 10 gal batches is if you don't dig how it turns out. Dump it or drink it? 5 gal batches give me an opportunity to try many more styles or improve on those I like

    New Kegging Questions

Can't remember the cost since it was a kit through KegConnection but it is a Taprite. Check into where you will either refill or exchange cylinders. My local Air Gas only does 5# or 20# but not 10# (which I purchased).

Glass carboy with hole on top

Wow, that glass is thick on the bottom. I've been meaning to document my attempt at shatter proofing a carboy. Maybe tomorrow

    What would you do?

How much spice did you add? I used 1/2 tsp at the end of the boil and while the spice was subtle in the carboy, it was fantastic in the glass

Maybe steeping a bunch of tea leaves with the grains? Or just tea bags

    Ignorance or truth

I know about dust explosions quite well. I'm dumbfounded because I'm known to be a home brewer. As for the dust, it would probably be easier to make it with a 2x4 and belt sander. I just know what happens next..."So, I heard that you are making a bomb"

    Ignorance or truth

I bought a bag of 2-row brewers malt the other day and put it on the break room counter at work on account of it being 96 degrees in my car outside. A supervisor stated that I can't keep it there because the ingredients could be used to make a bomb. My jaw almost dropped to the floor. Barring...

    Store washed yeast in bottles?

Everything I have seen or read about washing yeast mentions storing the washed yeast in mason jars or the like. Is there a reason that storing the washed yeast in cleaned and sanitized beer bottles, capped, and stored in the same manner would not work?

Making Traditional rice Wine. Cheap, Fun, and Different

I harvested my batch of rice wine made with Calrose last night and it turned out great. The first time I used a ratio of 1:2 rice/water and it was just way too sour, but I drank it anyways. This go around I used a 1:1 ratio and the difference was night and day. This has the perfect blend of...
