It too am "a ways" from a LHBS. In the past I have used grians that were crushed over a month prior to brewing and have not had a problem. I just made sure I stored them in a cool dry place (such as my mash tun)
I am looking to keep it between $100-$150. Mind you I am also looking to invest in a pump to save my aging muscles from lifting gallons of sparge water and wort.
