Brewing: Low Efficiency Desirable Benefits Possible? Can Tanking Efficiency INCREASE Flavor?

doug293cz, this is an excellent response, and this sentence in particular really got me thinking: "In order for sacrificing conversion efficiency to improve flavor, the rate of extraction for the flavor components of wort would have to be faster than the rate of starch conversion, otherwise...

Brewing: Low Efficiency Desirable Benefits Possible? Can Tanking Efficiency INCREASE Flavor?

I think this is a great response. Intuitively it makes sense to me that with higher conversion efficiency means we get more of everything out of the exact same grains (more sugar, more protein, more flavor, etc.). This really makes sense if the grain is completely homogeneous; as you leach more...

Brewing: Low Efficiency Desirable Benefits Possible? Can Tanking Efficiency INCREASE Flavor?

Main Question: Can I lower my brew-house efficiency purposefully to enable using a massive grain bill and get more flavor in my final product? Can low brew-house efficiency actually improve beer flavor, body, and mouthfeel in some scenarios because low efficiency implies more grain is being...

    Dextrose question

Hi C5babe, Dextrose is another name for glucose, which is the simplest "sugar" molecule - see the wiki: Glucose - Wikipedia. Table sugar, otherwise known granulated sugar, is sucrose (a combination molecule that links glucose with another simple sugar, fructose). Yeast can easily break...

    Little to excited; Extended primary?

I still say just leave it. It's probably mostly done with the primary active fermentation but there's a lot of "work" left for the yeast to do to consume/convert the undesirable compounds they created during fermentation that lead to off flavors; I find leaving the yeast undisturbed for about...

Sparging with the Anvil Foundry advice.

I would expect that this idea would not do anything or have minimal impact, depending on if you are recirculating during the mash or not, whereby recirculating during the mash would probably mean a "sparge" in the way you suggested would not do anything and if you are not recirculating it might...

    Little to excited; Extended primary?

When you say "just sitting on top", what exactly is sitting on top? Do you mean the lid to the bucket is resting on top of the bucket without actually being sealed? Assuming the answer to my question is yes, I would just pop the lid down and seal it if it is one of those simple plastic lip ones...

    Little to excited; Extended primary?

Personally I would not worry about it, as long as the bucket is sealed up with an airlock! 10 days on the original yeast cake is not very long, and may actually help with clearing up some of the off flavors. Just my two cents...

Low ABV day 4 of fermentation. Is this normal?

Like others have said it seems like your water and sugar blend may be a bit lacking in nutrients - I think adding a yeast nutrient could be a big benefit since the yeast need this to "reproduce". Additionally, if you did not heavily oxygenate (stir vigorously or somehow get oxygen in the...

Withdrawn Jaded or CuS.S. Chiller - Looking for Used Chiller with Hose Connects (Hydra, Scylla, e-Mmersion) - Northern Indiana

Hi All, I am looking for a chiller upgrade and wanted to see if anyone had a used chiller from Jaded? I can probably make anything work, and am open to any of their models as long as it has the 3/4 inch hose connects! Please let me know, thanks!
