    Simple recipe for sampling hops

I'm sure even in San Jose you've heard of "Carmegeddon" this weekend, and I live right next to it...I know what I'll be doing this weekend! Hops may be expensive...but they're cheaper than crack!

    Simple recipe for sampling hops

Amarillo it is! I think I'll use it all the way through. How does 1oz each at 60, 15, 5, and 0 with another ounce (or two) dry hop sound? Too much at 60? What schedule would maximize flavor? Should I do another addition at 2 mins? Also, a little off topic, but I've been mainly leaving...

    Simple recipe for sampling hops

Right. Again something I didn't think about. 1 lbs of steeped grain wouldn't add that much flavor anyway. But as you suggested I'll leave it for some color. I don't think I've yet used Warrior in a brew yet. I think I'll use an ounce at 60, and then...Amarillo? Cascade? I'm looking for...

    Simple recipe for sampling hops

3 replies, 3 good points. Lakewood and smagee I think you're right about the IBUs. I'll focus on late hop additions. Erik, I had seen the term SMASH a few times but never bothered to find out what it means. Sounds like that's exactly what I should be searching for. I wanted to assume crystal to...

    Simple recipe for sampling hops

I tried searching but couldn't think of good/concise search terms for my question. I want to start formulating my own recipes. Since I'm a "hop-head", I want to try and really get the different hop characteristics down. For this particular recipe, I want a brew pretty high in IBUs, but I'm...

    Has this happened to anyone?

I use the set it and forget it method to carbonate. I hook up to 12 psi and let it carb for about two weeks. For the record I have 5 feet of 3/16 beer line (not cheap plastic). And yes, I do have a blower cooling the tower. The first week or so of a new keg is the only time I don't get a glass...

    Has this happened to anyone?

Between kegs, I thoroughly clean and sanitize the beer lines, faucets, etc. Once I hook up my new keg, I get perfect pours. But after about a week, I get nothing but foam. When I first built my 'rator, I was getting nothing but foam, but when I would tap new kegs I would get encouraged...

I need to vent...and so did my batch

Thanks for the encouragment guys. I used a AHB kit because I had never tried Stone's Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout and I thought I'd brew it myself. The recipe said to steep 4 pounds of grain in 2.5 gallons of water. It said nothing of adding more water for the main boil. I just filled my boil...

I need to vent...and so did my batch

Thanks. Yeah not enough headroom. And maybe saying the ferm lock shattered is overstating it, but half of it was completely gone. I haven't even found it... And I like to think I'm well prepared, but when it comes to filling a carboy, i feel like I'm diluting my brew the less wort and more...

I don't know if west coast micros are available in NJ, but anything brewed by Stone or Russian River (call me a fanboy).

I need to vent...and so did my batch

Has anyone ever had a cursed batch of brew? It seems that for me brewing is getting Harder instead of easier. I think my technique is there, but random things keep happening. I made a yeast starter for the first time for the aforementioned cursed batch. It's a high gravity stout so I...

Wyeast 3724 Belgian Saison - they were right!

Aha! I read the same thing on Wyeast's website. I'm brewing a Stone Cali Belgique clone, and fermentation appeared to have stopped after a couple days. Temp was in the high 60s. I moved it to a warmer room for a few days, and nothing. Temp was about mid 70s. I just took a reading and the...
