lots of great replies!
my 2c is that method of mashing in depends on your set up. i.e. i use 10g round cooler with plastic false bottom, and if i add water first my false bottom floats up a little allowing grain to get under and resulting in stuck sparge.
so i always put grain first and...
you sure can do it. you can start at a lower temperature, then add hot water, to increase the temp. i use beersmith that has a calculator for that. i think you can find calc online as well.
you can do decoction mash as well but that will require draining some wart from MT heating it up and...
Hey everyone!
been reading up quite a bit, and see that most commercial breweries secondary at around 32 degrees. now from what i understand it is mainly done so beer clears up faster, but is there any more advantages to do it?
it seems that a lot of books put conditioning times at less...

great thread! helped quite a bit (and took few days to read all of it). i have one singe question.
someone recomended to bottle whole batch and put crowns on loosely then wait 5-10 minutes before capping them of. that suppose to release some co2 locked in the beer and since co2 is heavier...
well this is homebrewing so what ever works for you. go cheap in the begining since you might want to change things later.
i just did my first ag few days ago and my $10 MLT got 88% efficiency. i will likely upgrade but, for now it is just fine.
i think the suggestion was using LARGE 4x4 spice ball, it has over 4 times interior volume than the one you used.i have also seen 5" spice balls as well
well to each his own.
i can see that some people see benefits of secondary, mainly clearer beer.
i just got this bug recently and am much more concerned with my technique and taste of my beers. so at this point i dont see benefit of secondary for my purpose.
also from reading a lot it...
just read fthough all of this. i just brewed belgian strong pale, on monday now trying to decide on fermentation schedule. it seems like lots of people like primary only, so i am inclined to do that (especialy this being big beer - sg 1.085 or so)
i bottle for the time beeing and most...
so i am very glad,,i did the blowoff tube. i wouldn't done it if i haven't read that belgian yeast + big beer = boom :) krausen is coming out a lot. we have one of stupid heat waves in SF so temperature went up to 79-80 inside fermenter even it is in the basement.
anyways i made biger...
sounds about right. i use 25ft chiller + sumbersible aquarium pump that i put inthepot with runing tap water and ice, works well, but you do have to move chiller around quite a bit. and the cooler wart gets longer it takes to cool more as heat transfer is much more efficient with higher...
thats the idea! one thing though, how do you guys strain of the pellet hops.my primary has a lot of that stuff.
yest is starting to work bubling up a bit now. so i should have something of a beer her in a month or so.
