Thanks for all the suggestions. The only thing that will cut through that nasty glue is acetone, and even that is a huge chore. If I ever get another one, I will try the heat method to see if the label and glue come off together.
For now, one bottle cleaned up, eleven in the trash.

I got it off after my wife came home. I had her hug the carboy while I twisted off the cap. It was really stuck. I think the lesson learned is to make sure the threads on the neck of the carboy do not have wort on them from the transfer.

That's the first I have heard about chlorine. Yes, there is chlorine in our city water. I wish I would have known about this. I hope it is not ruined.
