Glass carboy bottom falls off. Beer everywhere.

I knew they could break, but didn't think one would fall apart with a beer that was just hanging out and aging inside. I did some research and already ordered the better bottle carboys. Gonna throw the other two glass ones away...

Glass carboy bottom falls off. Beer everywhere.

I use a wort chiller. This carboy lives in the basement and I've never cooled it or anything like that. Any beer in it is at room temp. Sucks you lost the fermenter! I'm not that disappointed in losing mine. I have two secondary's and definitely don't need both. I am very sad I lost this beer...

Glass carboy bottom falls off. Beer everywhere.

So I was out to lunch when I see a text from my wife saying my beer leaked everywhere. I'm thinking the keg leaked and I've lost the rest of my DIPA. I come home to find out the Belgian Tripel that had been sitting in secondary for 7 weeks is the one that leaked everywhere. So the bottom of...

    Confession Time

Thanks. On number 4 I believe I recirculated the first runnings and then for the lauter I just opened the valve all the way and let the wort pour in. It got stuck pretty quick so I kept stirring the grains around in the mash tun to unclog. I do wonder what my efficiency was for that one. I...

    Confession Time

I have enjoyed reading a lot of this thread. It is nice to see some things you can relax about. I dislike taking hydrometer readings and this thread hasn't compelled me to be religious about it. It is also funny to see all the people who ignore a lot of rules and still make "great beer." Who...

What I did for beer today

Brewing an AG Hop Head IPA from Midwest Supplies today. I've brewed it twice before. First time I thought it was my best brew, second time I believe it fermented too hot. Had a strawberry/bubblegum flavor. Also kegged a Calypso IPA and moved a Belgian Tripel to secondary. I usually don't have...

How quick will this strawberry/ bubblegum flavor go away?

Thanks. I know it is a long shot for this to be ready for the weekend, but I don't have anything on deck so I can let it sit out for a while. I checked my notes and saw that I actually had the ambient temp at 60 degrees to start. Just proves you really need to know what the temp is inside the...

How quick will this strawberry/ bubblegum flavor go away?

Just want a quick opinion. I brewed an extract hop head IPA from Midwest. Second time I have done this. Went very well the first time. I fermented for 16 days in temp controlled freezer. All was good. I kegged it and let it sit in the keg for two weeks. It started getting above 75 in my house...

    Getting Ready!

To prepare for your first brew you must imagine being stressed about every little thing, three scenarios where you think your beer is infected in the fermenter, tasting it too earlier and believing it is ruined...things get more chill over time for sure, but I think brewing sure can be...

    1st brew-no headspace in carboy

I have a 6.5 gallon carboy and two 5 gallons carboys. I've done a couple primaries in my five gallon ones since the other was in use. I even had a situation similar to this the first time I used it for primary. I think you can keep using it for primary if you like. You will just be used to...

Need help with first brew...secondary fermentation

I did an IPA recently. 6.5 abv and 70 ibus. After fermentation when checking gravity I noticed no aroma as well. I decided to dry hop with the finishing hop from the recipe, EK Goldings 2 oz for a week. I ended up thinking the hop aroma was way too strong (I have dry hopped a few beers before...

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Tin Mill brewery in Hermann MO made a wine IPA that I paid seven dollars for a pint. I didn't realize it actually had wine in it. Tasted worse than any of my homebrew flubs.

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

I went and bought 6 pint mason jars yesterday and and 4 pint jar to do this exactly as described. I am racking today so I was prepping for it yesterday. I boiled everything for twenty minutes and then tried to fish everything out. It didn't go well and all my lids got stuck in the four pint jar...

    Hoppy Wheat

Thanks for the feedback. I was a little unclear about the yeast. I am going to re use the yeast from the hoppy wheat kit I brewed recently. As for the hops I was curious if I should use a different hop for bittering or other flavors since cascade and Amarillo are pretty similar. I don't want the...
