Grainfather mash tun questions - standpipe and mash screen ?

I don't think any system could do a 10 min step without some sort of decoction mash or adding more hot water. My sparge goes pretty quick, but I feel the extraction of the GF is damn good and I am just more or less rinsing the grains at that point.

    Grainfather!!

Yeah, you are right about step mashes. I think your best shot there is to do a thinner mash to get more flow through the grain and keep it pumping at full volume. For real step mashes you may have to remove the top screen and give it a stir. Remember the bottom section is more or less...

    Grainfather!!

Did you have the pump valve full open? If the bottom switch is not on mash it will way over shoot and take awhile to come back down. That is where having some of the top water go down the overflow tube to keep the two areas closer together helps. Make sure you use a Mash Infusion Calculator...

    Grainfather!!

I used to do the slow method and tested with 2 extra probes. With the slow method the water on top really cools down, so that cool water is going into the bed. Going full speed the water on top is constantly being heated so the water on top and bottom will be the same. And if your bed temp...

    Grainfather!!

This is water not electricity. You have an inch of water over a bunch of holes. A lot of it is going to go down the holes. The more water over the screen the more pressure it is going to have to force it into the bed.

    Grainfather!!

Nothing shocking here. When adding pounds and pounds of grain at room temp to water of course it is going to drop. Use an online calculator to find the right temp, but it is always close to 10f for me. Also, another tip when heating your strike water. I always let it get close to temp and...

Caribou Slobber Extract: Add water before or after boil?

Have you tried any nut brown ales? I am thinking of doing a brown next. May try this or Caribou. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=30187

The not so obvious - things I wish I knew...

Put your LME in a hot water bath (hot tap) in your sink or use a small cooler.

    Two Hearted Ale Clone

May be a bit strong but should be good. I bet this will get better with more bottle conditioning (month or more). I punched your recipe into Brewer's friend calculator with 75% efficiency and got 1.082. Good advice from islandLizard.

    what beer would this be

Dry hop will only give you flavor and aroma, no IBUs

    Two Hearted Ale Clone

Wow that is bad. I would not put anything above 140F into plastic either (could do this for no chill but that more advanced). You should put your pot in a sink/tub cold water bath to cool down first. Best beginner vid I have seen.

    Two Hearted Ale Clone

The Vienna does seem a bit weird for an extract batch (seems like a mini mash). Your 9.9 lb of dme will get you to 1.076 and 7.4 % abv already. I just made a clone that came out great. 9.15 lbs gold lme Specialty Grain 1 lbs caramel 40 BOIL ADDITIONS & TIMES 0.75 oz...

    Grainfather!!

I don't think it works any better and plus have extra for other projects. Plus, $50 bucks half the price of a new grain mill. :mug:
