    Rootbeer sweetening

Opps bottle* and another note. I also believe i may have used too much malto dextrin. All i can say is add a bit at a time until it tastes and feels right. But remember you still have to add water to bring to 5 gallons. You will have to compensate the difference. Otherwise you will be adding the...

    Rootbeer sweetening

I used 8 oz weight measurement in 5 gallons. Did not affect the flavor, as i used the same recipe with out. Tasted the same but added a silk like smoothness for mouth feel. Seems to me your using to much malto dextrin. I added a little bit at a time until it tasted and felt just right. So far...

    Rootbeer sweetening

I used the maltodextrin. It is night and day. Cane sugar and malto dextrin for sugars. End result if you use just cane sugar your beverage will be very thin. Great taste but no body. Cane sugar and some malto dextrin created that full body feel with out over sweetening.. will definitely be using...

What are the benefits of yeast harvesting/washing?

Hey man thats what we are here for. Try doing a blowoff tube and you can solve the problem with your air lock clogging. That happened to me twice and i didnt catch it in time, the airlock blew off and krowsen foam was everywhere , not to mention it cracked my air lock. A blowoff tube would do...

What are the benefits of yeast harvesting/washing?

The only thing with over pitching yeast which i believe any brewer that's done it before or truly understands yeast is this, yeast is a living organism.. that being said the idea behind harvesting yeast and pitching precisely the right amount is a matter of biology. A brewer wants to maximize...

    Rootbeer sweetening

Thank you. It absolutely is a help. I will give it a try. The malt dextrin is for thickning of the feel right? So you would still need to use another sweetener to go along with it. I k ow in making beer to add to the body you can use lactose because its non fermentable. Was just wondering if it...

    weird fermentation

Not sure i know that old yeast or unhealthy yeast will ferment at a slower less productive rate than healthy fresh yeast. However im hardly an expert. I would take a gravity read and see where it's at if fermenting is still needed to be done maybe pitch some more. Also my beers fermentation has...

What are the benefits of yeast harvesting/washing?

I do believe its about 3 months. And then you need to reactivate to get new yeast and then wash and store. You can also freeze yeast to preserve freshness

What are the benefits of yeast harvesting/washing?

I have never harvested yeast myself. Plan to start though. I know there is only a certain period of time you can store in refrigerator, but all you have to do if storing over that period of time is reactivate in a starter, wash and store again.

What are the benefits of yeast harvesting/washing?

Personal preference my friend. Sometimes it is more cost affective to buy new or harvest. You don't have to buy new yeast to activate dormant yeast. That is the purpose of the starter. Fresh yeast is still dormant when using it. By pitching it in or pouring to an appropriate temp for fermenting...
