It won't do a full 4 gal boil since you need space above the wort for the active boil but I've been using my cheap ($4) stock pots over four years and the only problem is the oldest one had the curl over or lip develope a small crack so it's out of service for safety reasons. Scorching has not...

I gently rinse my grain bag as it sits in a SS strainer over my brew pot with a pot of coffee maker water, which just happens to be about 170*F. Does it help? I would like to think so.
