Why are your best beers almost always your "Oops!" beers?

I know what you mean. A couple of months ago I was brewing a CA Common with some buddies of mine. I had been more or less following the recipe in Jamil and Palmer's book, but had to make some substitutions at the LHBS. One of which was switching from a mild chocolate to a chocolate malt; little...

Do Not Fear All-Grain Brewing - A Primer

Touché. And well put. I suppose it's easy to get caught up in the efficiency race. On another note, I've been assembling my list of equipment for going all grain. I'll be back to this thread once it's procured! :mug:

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

That might be a good option for those bigger brew days. To do this kind of sparging, I'd just have separate pot going with sparge water and transfer the grain bag into it after the mash, agitate, and let sit for a bit? Then drain it out and add the results back into the kettle?

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

Wow--that's impressive that your keggle retains the heat so well. With your keggle you would have enough headspace to make a bigger brew by a couple of gallons? Also, I signed up for BIABrewer--thanks for the tip!

    BIAB Brewing (with pics)

I spent most of yesterday reading up on BIAB techniques, equipment, etc., and this thread has been by far the best primer I've seen. Thanks for the great picks! I'm convinced that as I go AG in the next couple of months, I want to use a BIAB system. Here's my dilemma, though, and it's about...

A Poor-Planner's Dilemma: Bottle Early, Long Primary, or Secondary?

Hey AZ_IPA, your pic looks like a sunset from around the Flagstaff area. Is that where you're at? My brother lives in Flagstaff and that's actually where we're headed on our road trip!

A Poor-Planner's Dilemma: Bottle Early, Long Primary, or Secondary?

Thanks for all the input everyone! I'm probably going to just leave it on the primary, since it seems that 4 weeks with a big, hoppy ale won't be a problem. But I like beerhappy's advice too: I'll definitely be evaluating it before I go. Who knows, if it's done, I might be able to bottle it...

    First BIAB

What's your setup like? I'm curious to know... thinking about shifting to BIAB at some point.

A Poor-Planner's Dilemma: Bottle Early, Long Primary, or Secondary?

Yesterday I brewed a rendition of Janet's Brown Ale from Brewing Classic Styles, which is happily fermenting away as we speak. However, my wife just asked me: "Will we be able to bottle that brown ale before we go on our road trip?" Touché. So we're leaving on June 9th, 11 days after...

    Memorial day

Brewed a big brown ale yesterday. Might bottle the wheat today. Then again, maybe I'll just sit back and relax and worry about bottling some other time...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2011?

    + 5 gallons of Janet's Brown Ale = 16366.5

Do Not Fear All-Grain Brewing - A Primer

Awesome primer. I'm hoping to move into AG this summer, provided I can allocate enough funds to it! And I'm just curious with your technique: How consistent is your efficiency? Or perhaps put a better way, how near to your planned OG do you usually come after the mash? My partial mashes with...

What are you brewing this weekend

I think I'm going to brew a big ol' brown ale tomorrow. I suppose it's not very summery, but I've never tried the style.

Favorite commercial beer? Just for fun!

Being a Northern California native, I tend to rotate between the local IPAs/Imperial IPAs: Racer 5 (Bear Republic), Lagunitas IPA/Maximus/Hop Stoopid, and Pliny the Elder (Russian River). I've been getting into Belgians more and more, and I like Pranqster a lot.

    Hello from Santa Rosa, CA

Hi all, I've been prowling HBT for months, but I've finally joined up and started posting. I've been brewing with friends since 2006, but now I've (finally) got my own setup and have become the Brewmaster, which I never used to do. Needless to say, I'm hooked! Looking forward to more...
