2 most important things you learned/wish you knew

    1) yeast starters=quick fermentation 2) it's a hobby and is supposed to be fun. I can get bogged down and intense on brew day i.e. Homemade wort chiller won't drop temp fast enough and I'm going to have an infection. I've chucked the crappy WC and just put it in the ferment bucket and wait til...

    Seattle Brewery Recommendations

Hales Ales in Ballard/Fremont district. I think it's on Market St. Grew up there and cut my teeth on Rainier for gut rot college beer, but then found Red Hook and haven't looked back since. I live in the Midwest now and get back every couple of years and Hales Ales is my first stop. The Wee...

Top tips for speeding up a brew day

Kind of on topic. Has anyone split their brew day? Mashed one day and boiled the next?

Connecticut What's the best strategy for selling all your gear?

Just started brewing again after a good ten plus years, prolly closer to fifteen, hiatus from the hobby. Kept it in the basement and knew I'd get back to it. Got back into it the last couple of years and really glad I don't have to go out and rebuy everything. Hang onto your gear. You'll get...

Strong Bitter Captain Hooked on Bitters (Red Hook Clone & Award Winner)

Brewed this over the weekend but didn't get enough runoff and ended up with only nine gallons. Literally threw away another couple of gallons of 1.020 because I tho't I had twelve gallons, I think it was only tenish. subsequently ended with a OG of 1.067, way over the recipe. Should I dry hop...

    Red Hook Clone

Brewed the Red Hook clone from the recipe database for a ten gallon batch. It was my first AG 10 gallon batch so was a little shakey on the amount to collect. Tho't I had eleven gallons but probably ended up with ten. Ended up with about nine in the carboys. Good and bad news was that the OG...

    Double IPA versus Imperial IPA

The story sounds like Hale's Ales, which has multiple IPAs and IIPAs on tap at their beer bar. Sent from my iPad using Home Brew

Strong Bitter Captain Hooked on Bitters (Red Hook Clone & Award Winner)

Brewing this on Saturday with 19 lbs of the pale, then the oner of biscuit. Everything else the same except the yeast I'm using is the 1099 Whitbred. They seem to be fairly similar and I have it left over from an ipa I just brewed. My MT can only hold ten gallons and the mash will take up about...

    World's Biggest Yeast Starter

It wasn't overly bitter, but more than you would expect from an Oktoberfest. I'm hoping if I under hop the next one I should get it balanced out.

    World's Biggest Yeast Starter

Brewed an Oktoberfest with 10.5 lbs of grain and ended up with an OG of 1.030. I tho't my hydrometer was broken since the recipe would have produced around 1.055. After reading a few threads on efficiency it seems as if grain crush could be a huge issue. Checked my spent grain and was noticing a...

    Old King Kooker

Was out of brewing for awhile, nearly fifteen years, to be truthful. But kept all the equipment. Back in it now, but the only problem is the burner I had bought. Propane hook-ups don't work with the new tanks. Any ideas on how to retrofit this? I'm sure there's a thread someplace around here but...

Which lager yeast should I choose? - no lagerator

Would you be better off brewing a Kolsch? I've never brewed one but my understanding is that it's a lager type taste but brewed at ale temps. Maybe an acceptable compromise if you can't lager.

    Saison Not Finishing?

Just bottled a Saison using 3724. Very sluggish, took two months until it finished with a reading of 1.005. I moved mine to my garage to get more heat but with the cool summer it wasn't consistently hot enough. 3724 loves it hot. It finally finished when the temp in the garage was over 90. I...

    Wyeast Belgian

An update, if anyone would remember. Brewed a Belgium Saison back at the end of June with the Wyeast Belgium Saison. Had a difficult time getting fermentation going at a robust level, so moved it to,the garage which really made a difference.. But it wasn't done. It was still puttering along and...

    Belgium Saison

Yup, it's the 3724. It's rocking more now than it did during the primary. I'll leave it in the garage. Thanks a ton.
