I agree, "higher temp" is a relative term and there is definitely a limit. As well, there's no reason not to pitch the right amount of yeast at fermentation temps. It's not hard and will make your beer so much better.
I believe that if you're under-pitching it's ok to start at a higher temp, because the yeast need to reproduce anyway and the warmer temps help with that. Also, they will be getting their numbers up while the temp drops to the desired fermentation temps so by the time they start fermenting...
Hey everyone, I may have done something dumb and was wondering if there is anyone out there with experience on this. I happened to have an extra cheapo adhesive thermometer and decided to put it on my 2L Earlenmeyer flask that I use for starters. About 4 seconds after I put it on there I...
I actually just bottled my first batch of wheat beer and I used WLP-320 American Hefe yeast. I opened my fermenter to see the same thing you took a picture of and had a little panic attack. None of the other beers I've brewed had floaters like that before. I thought maybe it's from the low...
Today I think I've decided to switch to Plato from SG for the simple fact that when taking a hydrometer reading in cloudy (wheat) beer the Plato scale is much easier to read i.e. 5ºP is approx 20 SG points which can be frustrating to get an exact reading on with the more bunched up scale. I like...
Thanks for this post! I am currently sitting here watching my starter flask overflow (White labs American Hefeweizen) and I am concerned about how much is escaping. There is a decent amount of slurry building up outside, but I have what seems like a decent amount still inside. Also, the wort is...
Check out this episode of Brew Strong with Jamil and John Palmer. It's pretty much everything you need to know about yeast starters with in depth answers. A GREAT resource from people who know their beer.

Oh man! That's really funny/sad! Also, blowoff tubes should be be larger than a normal siphon hose. Probably as large a you can get within reason,so it doesn't get all munged up.
