When does the beer start tasting good?

In my experience 3-5 weeks is a good guideline, but as others mentioned there's nothing wrong with sampling along the way. Personally, I'm too damn impatient to wait the whole time period before trying it. Just don't be disappointed if it's not everything you'd hoped for right away.

    Scales

I've got a digital salter scale that I picked up at London Drugs (I'm pretty sure they don't have these in the US...). Looking back, I wish I'd have gotten something with a little more capacity, but you can also do your measurements in more than one step to get around this.

    Buying supplies on line

I've bought a few things from midwest supplies, and I've been happy with the quality and time the items took to get here.

    Least favorite style?

Not a fan of fruit beers, at least those I've tried thus far. I forget the company that produced the last Cherry Kriek I tried, but I couldn't even finish it. It tasted like cough syrup mixed with beer. If that's blasphemy I'm sorry lol, but it was really bad. So far I'm not too big on Trappist...

    Why did you start brewing?

Ah come on:) In the big scheme of things, to get into extract brewing it's relatively cheap. Us Canadians have it notoriously bad in terms of liquor taxes, but I'm sure most Americans will be able to pay for the cost of equipment and ingredients within the first couple batches at most.

    Why did you start brewing?

If you guys can remember; what was it that initially sparked your interest or made you decide to start brewing your own? For me it was a combination of the following: 1) Inexpensive way of obtaining microbrew quality flavor 2) It seemed really fun and fascinating 3) Once I looked into it, I...

    Who's brewing this weekend?

Not brewing, just racking a basic pale ale kit brew to the secondary. My stocks are getting low, so another batch is definitely in order very soon though.

    Perfect begginers beer.

You could also try one of the "no-boil" kits. It really doesn't get much easier than that. The brands they have in my area are "Baron's" and "RJ Spagnols/Brew House". I've had good success with all the ones I've tried. It also cuts an hour off your brew time.

    Water Poll

I've only ever used tap water. Then again ours is exceptionally good around here, so I never had any doubts about its quality.

    My first home brew

That sucks about the owners of your homebrew shop treating you that way. I was lucky to start off at a store that was extremely helpful right from the start. A place called RJ Spagnols here in BC, they've definately got my repeat business because of that.
