    Over Carbonation or Infection?

It was Omega Yeast British Ale I Yeast. I was at 68 degrees give or take a degree for the entire fermentation. Bottled at the same temp. I saw 1.002 after bottling. But I suppose that could be a miscalculation. I will try a reading again with another bottle. I did try the degas thing with a...

    That is correct.

    Over Carbonation or Infection?

Ok just took a reading and I am 1.002. And yes all bottles are over carbed. Forgot to answer that.

    Over Carbonation or Infection?

Well I am actually using a refractometer. And it is calibrated.

    Over Carbonation or Infection?

I used the solution of corn sugar and boiling water. Boiled for about 8 minutes or so. 3.8 ounces wouldn't be enough for 4.5 gallon ipa? I didn't bother tasting. By the time it was done gushing there was nothing left. I didn't take a reading. I will try that.

    Over Carbonation or Infection?

I know this topic has been discussed here so I apologize for bringing it up again but this is driving me nuts and honestly I am ready to throw in the towel and just go back to drinking good beer and let others brew it. I have had the last 3 batches over carbonate in the bottles. But now I am...

Failed To Calculate Cells in Yeast Starter

Ok cool, thanks. I really didn't think fermentation was lacking. Can't imagine how it would have been had I bumped up the cell count.

Failed To Calculate Cells in Yeast Starter

Ok thanks. I will make sure I either use a blow off or the fermcap in the future. I did a general search and it seems I am not the first to make this mistake. Another lesson learned. All part of the process I suppose.

Failed To Calculate Cells in Yeast Starter

If only I followed that advice. Left for the day and came home to the airlock on the floor and krausen oozing out the top. Ok now is my batch going to suffer?haha

Failed To Calculate Cells in Yeast Starter

I just did my 2nd batch using a starter. Northern Brewer Dead Ringer Ipa which had an og of 1.071. My first was the Caribou Slobber - Og 1.056. I did not have a stir plate when I did the Slobber. Just manually sloshed it around. I have since purchased a stir plate to use with my 2nd starter -...

Understanding Steeping Grains vs Mashing Grains

Yeah that's the list I was referencing when checking out the ingredients of the recipe posted. I do follow all this. Thanks for the input. I guess I was thrown off by mashing grains in an extract recipe. I'll seek another recipe that only utilizes steeping grains.

Understanding Steeping Grains vs Mashing Grains

Hi all. New home brewer here. I have done a few extract batches from recipe kits now and am comfortable with the process. I am not ready to put together my own recipe but I would like to try a recipe posted on one of the various sites just to get the hang of it all. I am confused about...

My first 2 batches only yielded 40 bottles?

Ok thanks all. I will learn to not sweat little things like this as time goes on. But I did learn something. What I thought was 5 gallons in my carboy is not. I filled 5 gallon jugs, poured it in and checked. It was 2 inches above what I thought to be the 5 gallon mark. when determining it the...

My first 2 batches only yielded 40 bottles?

I am not sure how out of the ordinary this is but I was expecting more than 40 bottles. I now realize there will be some loss to trub but that much? I am not doing secondary fermentation or anything like that. Both were Ipa extract kits.I think I did a pretty good job of racking to the bottling...
