    Starter infected?

Ahh gotcha. So in a full fermentation that would be the stuff that gets "top cropped" for yeast harvesting eh?

    Starter infected?

I thought so but just needed someone to talk me off the ledge. What is that dark particulate resting on top?

    Starter infected?

Howdy all, I'm getting ready to make a pale ale this Sunday so I got my starter going yesterday. This will be the second time I've done a starter. I was a bad father the first time and didn't really pay attention to how it was coming along so I'm not sure if this is normal. There is...

    Session APA advice

Thanks for the input. Is there a way to roughly determine the amount of IBUs these additions will create? I'm still green using Beer Smith and I currently don't see any whirlpool options. J

Which crystal malt do you use? I was thinking 10.

    Session APA advice

Thanks. I was basing the dry hop additions on Tasty McDole's session recipe. I think I'll dry hop with 1-1.5 and put an ounce in a tea strainer in the keg. Here's the link to Tasty's recipe. http://drinkdrakes.com/site/tag/tasty-mcdole/ J

    Session APA advice

Indeed. I'm considering dropping some or all of the aroma additions or moving them to the whirlpool. Thanks for pointing that out. Justin

    Session APA advice

Yeah that's what I get for tinkering with the recipe that I've already put posted in the thread. The total IBU is right I just forgot to adjust individual IBU totals per addition as I tweaked it down.

    Session APA advice

Howdy all, I'm looking to brew a Session APA for a friend's birthday at the end of July. Take a peek at the preliminary recipe and lemme know what you think. This will be my 5th AG batch. Est Original Gravity: 1.042 SG Est Final Gravity: 1.009 SG Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 4.3 %...

    Fruit Beer Lemon-Lime Hefe Weizen

Thanks. I guess I was worried that I waited too long to add the limeade and was further concerned when I didn't see any blowoff activity. I suspect everything will be fine. I'm already looking forward to brewing this again with the Hefe IV yeast.

    Fruit Beer Lemon-Lime Hefe Weizen

Howdy all. I went to add the limeade after almost 3 days of fermentation and I discovered my gravity was already at 1.012. In went the limeade and I replaced the airlock with a blowoff tube in case things got messy. I looked the next morning and there had been no blowoff through the tube...

    American(ish) Style Wheat

Thanks for the replies. LHBS didn't have any Galaxy. May have to dip into my supply of Citra if they don't have it by the time this batch is up in the queue. Any opinions on the Vienna addition? I'm trying to get a bit more orange in the color and just a hint of that malt complexity. Still...

    American(ish) Style Wheat

Howdy all, I'm anxious to get an easy drinker in the keg for the summer. I decided on the American wheat since my girlfriend and I both enjoy Gumballhead and Oberon. I have a couple questions, most related to fermentation. I was gonna use 6 lbs US 2 row, 5 pounds wheat malt, and up to a...

Hot break issue on batch #2

Yep yep. After dumping the batch (I got nervous!) I saw a whole bunch of break material at the bottom of the kettle. I think I just had the flame waaaaay too high and what I was seeing was just a series of boilovers. I guess it comes with the territory of being a new brewer. Not used to...

Hot break issue on batch #2

Thanks for the input. It's one of those Bayou Classic burners attached to the propane. I'm pretty sure it was something I did that prevented the full boil. I stirred it and the foam would subside but it wouldn't "break." With my first batch there was a rising foam then eventually the wort...
