Between the wood collar and the lip of the freezer top, I installed a strip of about 3/4" x 1/2" high density foam-rubber weather stripping. I built the collar on a flat surface prior to mounting it onto the freezer. The corners are mitered (with a circular saw, not very precisely unfortunately) and glued together. To provide a little more support, the inside corners of the collar also have small 90 degree brackets that are approximately 1.5" long on each side, fixed with screws. The finished and unstained collar was then set on top of the foam rubber lip, and then screwed to the freezer top with another set of the same 90 degree metal brackets, in position under slight pressure on the foam strip to ensure any gaps were filled. The brackets are screwed onto the freezer top with short sheet metal screws to ensure no damage is done to the freezer.
