So, I put together my own version of a DIY stirplate with stuff I had laying around.

top from CD case = free
Computer fan with broken fins (still spins nicely) = free
variable computer fan controller = free
magnet from dead hard drive = free
glue for magnet = free
nuts and bolts = free
power supply from broken hand vac = free
cardboard box = free
stir bar = $4.00

Total = $4.00

Works pretty well, and SWMBO is glad I didn't spend much money on it.
