I've only used my wort chiller once, but when I did I left the rubber hose on it when I put it into the wort. it is made it of twenty feet of cooper and some clear plastic house from home depot. The plastic started melting and I had to remove the clamps and take the house off. Could someone with a similar setup advise if I'm doing something wrong here? I didn't run water through it until flame out, and added the chiller with my irish moss. I am thinking I need to start out without the hose attached.

Mine did the same thing.
Next time I'm just going to sanitize it with SS and then drop it in.

you need to not be using vinyl hose, especially at higher temperatures. if you must use vinyl, get the thick walled fiber reinforced kind. and then it should only be used as a waste water hose on the chiller where it would never contact the beer.

silicone or naural rubber are good for elevated temperature.
