Has anyone tried to build a wort chiller out of a window unit? Generally the evaporator coil temp would be sub 50 deg F. The thought would be do the following:

1. Dismantle the casing
2. Build a aluminum "tank" around the cooling coil. JB weld it water tight.
3. Wrap the cooling coil with a 1/2" copper line for wort circ.
4. Fill with water to be used as the transfer medium between both closed loops.

Most window units are 3/4 or 1ton which is 8-12,000 btu/h

I am going to work up a calculation to see how quick one could expect to reduce wort from boiling to 70 with this type setup, but thought I would ask if anyone has done it first.

I have contemplated it using glycol as the transfer medium, but that project is still in the planning/dreaming phase for me.
