Why are 2 keggles needed?

Wouldnt it be possible if you had a large enough mash tun (a large cooler converted), to heat the water in one keggle to the proper steeping temp, transfer that heated water into the mash tun, then after the hour or so transfer back into that one keggle and bring that to a boil?
 
Some people, like me, use two smaller pots that they already have on hand for their sparge water, so they don't have to buy two large pots/keggles.
 
You could do it... Just collect your first and second runnings into plastic pails; it's just much easier to have a dedicated HLT in my opinion.
 
The benefit to having a dedicated hot liquor tank and separate boil kettle is just a time savings thing. You'd be able to start heating the first wort while your liquor tank is still holding sparge water. It's not necessary though. Just collect in buckets as already mentioned.
